Introduction

Jianqiang Xu currently works actively as a Biotechnologist in Selenium Biology and Glycobiology Lab, School of Life and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dalian University of Technology (DUT), Panjin-124221 China. He completed his B.S. degree (2002) and Ph.D. degree (2008) in Biochemical Engineering at Dalian University of Technology, China, supervised by Profs. Qing Yang and Lijia An. His doctoral thesis focused on the soluble expression and biochemical characterization of gloshedobin, a thrombin-like enzyme from the venom of snake Gloydius shedaoensis. During the PhD training, he had studied molecular cloning and protein expression and identification at TaKaRa Biotechnology (Dalian) in 2004, as well as biotransformation and protein purification using the barker’s yeast supervised by Professor Jan-Christer Janson at Uppsala Universitet Biomedicinsk Centrum, Sweden in 2005. Later on, he carried out his postdoctoral research work in 2009 to 2014 supervised by Prof. Elias S.J. Arnér at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. During that period, he conducted several projects including preparation and biochemical characterization of key anticancer target – selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), site-directed mutagenesis of human thioredoxin and rat TrxR, screening and profiling of new antitumor inhibitors, crystallization of selenoproteins, selenocysteine incorporation via wobble decoding, and etc. In 2015, he started his independent research career at Panjin Campus of DUT, mainly focusing on selenium biochemistry and seleniummedical applications. Since January of 2018, he was appointed as Vice Dean of Panjin Institute of Industrial Technology of DUT. Doing good research and connecting science with real application are the life-long goal for him to work on.

Jianqiang Xu has been working on the high-efficiency Sec incorporation, molecular mechanism of small antitumor drugs and parallel biochemical pharmacological studies and has published 30 peer-reviewed research papers in the above topic. His research interests focus on the biological redox regulation, including developing functional peptides and foods, understanding small molecule drugs targeting the redox system, and exploring the functions and mechanisms of selenium and selenoproteins in redox regulation and disease progress.
