As an alternative method of nematode control, biofumigation is increasingly gaining space. This research aimed to study the reaction of to , , and and soil biofumigation with leaves for control. The reaction test was performed in the populations 0 (control), 333, 999, 3,000, 9,000, 27,000 eggs and eventual juveniles. did not host the species studied, even in a high population. leaves incorporated in soil at concentrations 0 (control), 0.45, 0.9, 1.8, 3.6 g were also studied to control , and they were able to reduce galls and eggs. The number of galls and egg masses was reduced to a concentration of 1.8 g. In the maximum concentration, the number of galls was less than 15 galls, and the eggs were also reduced to less than 200 eggs. As these macerates emitted nematicidal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) against , it reduced the infectivity and reproduction of nematodes.

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair: cost-effectiveness analysis of trend modifications of the technique.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different modifications of the trans-abdominal pre-peritoneal (TAPP) repair of groin hernia. Data were collected prospectively for all consecutive patients who underwent TAPP unilateral inguinal hernia repair between November 2017 and March 2019, and who completed a minimum of 1 year of follow-up. Costs and quality adjusted life year (QALY) gained were collected. Three TAPP variations were assessed: mesh fixation and peritoneal closure with staples (group 1); mesh fixation with fibrin glue and peritoneal closure with sutures (group 2); and mesh fixation and peritoneal closure with fibrin glue (group 3). A matched group of open repairs was established. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and main intra-operative and post-operative outcomes were assessed. Overall 120 patients were included (group 1 n = 31; group 2 n = 27; group 3 n = 33; open group: 29). Operative time was shorter for groups 2 and 3, and the main post-operative outcomes were similar. The overall mean total cost of the open group (1185.95€) was lower compared with the laparoscopic group (group 1: 1682.39; group 2: 1538.54€; group 3: 1510.1€) (p = 0.026). However, the mean ICERs of groups 2 and 3 were significantly higher compared with group 1 (p = 0.021) and the open group (p = 0.032). At simulations analysis, the probability of cost-effectiveness was 33.32%, 36.26%, and 36.7% in TAPP groups 1, 2, and 3. In the long term, laparoscopic repair of groin hernia is cost-effective compared with open surgery. The use of fibrin glue for mesh fixation and/or for closing the peritoneum is the most cost-effective option and shortens operative times.

Contribution of minimally processed and ultra-processed foods to the cardiometabolic risk of Brazilian young adults: a cross-sectional study.

Introduction: the simultaneous increase in the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases and in the consumption of ultraprocessed foods (UPF) suggests a possible relationship between UPF and cardiometabolic risk (CMR).

Objective: to evaluate the association between food consumption, according to the degree of processing, and CMR in young adults.

Methods: this is a comparative cross-sectional study in 120 Brazilian young adults aged 18-25 years, categorized by the presence of CMR. Food consumption was investigated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and classified according to the extent of food processing. Food groups and tertiles in grams of unprocessed, minimally processed (MPF), processed and ultra-processed foods (UPF) were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The associations of food consumption, according to level of processing (MPF and UPF), with CMR components were evaluated using logistic regression models.

Results: a high caloric contribution of UPF was observed in the diet of this study population. The total energy intake from lipids in all foods (p = 0.04) and in UPF (p = 0.03) was greater in the group with CMR. A greater consumption of UPF was a risk factor for abdominal obesity (OR = 1.09; 95 % CI = 1.00-1.18) while a greater consumption of MPF was protective for LDL-c alterations independently of sex, physical activity, and alcohol intake (OR = 0.70; 95 % CI = 0.50-0.98).

Conclusions: UPF contributed to a greater caloric intake from fat in the CMR, and was a risk factor for abdominal obesity. MPF was an independent protective factor for LDL-c alterations.

Azithromycin in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial.

Background: Azithromycin has been proposed as a treatment for COVID-19 on the basis of its immunomodulatory actions. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of azithromycin in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19.

Methods: In this randomised, controlled, open-label, adaptive platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]), several possible treatments were compared with usual care in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 in the UK. The trial is underway at 176 hospitals in the UK. Eligible and consenting patients were randomly allocated to either usual standard of care alone or usual standard of care plus azithromycin 500 mg once per day by mouth or intravenously for 10 days or until discharge (or allocation to one of the other RECOVERY treatment groups). Patients were assigned via web-based simple (unstratified) randomisation with allocation concealment and were twice as likely to be randomly assigned to usual care than to any of the active treatment groups. Participants and local study staff were not masked to the allocated treatment, but all others involved in the trial were masked to the outcome data during the trial. The primary outcome was 28-day all-cause mortality, assessed in the intention-to-treat population. The trial is registered with ISRCTN, 50189673, and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04381936.

Findings: Between April 7 and Nov 27, 2020, of 16 442 patients enrolled in the RECOVERY trial, 9433 (57%) were eligible and 7763 were included in the assessment of azithromycin. The mean age of these study participants was 65·3 years (SD 15·7) and approximately a third were women (2944 [38%] of 7763). 2582 patients were randomly allocated to receive azithromycin and 5181 patients were randomly allocated to usual care alone. Overall, 561 (22%) patients allocated to azithromycin and 1162 (22%) patients allocated to usual care died within 28 days (rate ratio 0·97, 95% CI 0·87-1·07; p=0·50). No significant difference was seen in duration of hospital stay (median 10 days [IQR 5 to >28] vs 11 days [5 to >28]) or the proportion of patients discharged from hospital alive within 28 days (rate ratio 1·04, 95% CI 0·98-1·10; p=0·19). Among those not on invasive mechanical ventilation at baseline, no significant difference was seen in the proportion meeting the composite endpoint of invasive mechanical ventilation or death (risk ratio 0·95, 95% CI 0·87-1·03; p=0·24).

Interpretation: In patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, azithromycin did not improve survival or other prespecified clinical outcomes. Azithromycin use in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 should be restricted to patients in whom there is a clear antimicrobial indication.

Boosting the Metathesis Activity of Molybdenum Oxo Alkylidenes by Tuning the Anionic Ligand σ Donation.

The catalytic performances of molecular and silica-supported molybdenum oxo alkylidene species bearing anionic O ligands [OR, OTPP, OHMT - where OR = OC(CF), OTPP = 2,3,5,6-tetraphenylphenoxy, OHMT = hexamethylterphenoxy] with different σ-donation abilities and sizes are evaluated in the metathesis of both internal and terminal olefins. Here, we show that the presence of the anionic nonafluoro--butoxy X ligand in Mo(O){═CH-4-(MeO)CH}(THF){X} (; X = OR) significantly increases the catalytic performances in the metathesis of both terminal and internal olefins. Its silica-supported equivalent displays slightly lower activity, albeit with improved stability. In sharp contrast, the molecular complexes with large aryloxy anionic X ligands show little activity, whereas the activity of the corresponding silica-supported systems is greatly improved, illustrating that surface siloxy groups are significantly smaller anionic ligands. Of all of the systems, compound stands out because of its unique high activity for both terminal and internal olefins. Density functional theory modeling indicates that the OR ligand is ideal in this series because of its weak σ-donating ability, avoiding overstabilization of the metallacyclobutane intermediates while keeping low barriers for [2 + 2] cycloaddition and turnstile isomerization.

Optimal waist circumference cutoff values to predict cardiometabolic alterations in a Venezuela national representative sample. The EVESCAM study.

Background: Waist circumference (WC) value reflects abdominal adiposity, but the amount abdominal fat that is associated to cardiometabolic risk factors varies among ethnicities. Determination of metabolic abnormalities has not undergone a WC adaptation process in Venezuela.

Aims: The aim of the study was (1) to determine the optimal WC cutoff value associated with ≥2 cardiometabolic alterations and (2) incorporating this new WC cutoff, to determine the prevalence of abdominal obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors related in Venezuela.

Methods: The study was national population-based, cross-sectional, and randomized sample, from 2014 to 2017. To assess performance of WC for identifying cardiometabolic alterations, receiver operating characteristics curves, area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and positive likelihood ratios were calculated.

Results: Three thousand three hundred eighty-seven adults were evaluated with mean age of 41.2 ± 15.8 years. Using the best tradeoff between sensitivity and specificity, WC cutoffs of 90 cm in men (sensitivity = 72.4% and specificity = 66.1%) and 86 cm in women (sensitivity = 76.2% and specificity = 61.4%) were optimal for aggregation of ≥2 cardiometabolic alterations. AUC was 0.75 in men and 0.73 in women using these new cutoffs. Prevalence of abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome was 59.6% (95 CI; 57.5-61.7) and 47.6% (95 CI; 45.2-50.0), respectively. Cardiometabolic risk factors were associated with being men, higher age, adiposity, and living in northern or western regions.

Conclusion: The optimal WC values associated with cardiometabolic alterations were 90 cm in men and 86 cm in women. More than half of the Venezuelan population had abdominal obesity incorporating this new WC cutoff.

Deep learning-level melanoma detection by interpretable machine learning and imaging biomarker cues.

Significance: Melanoma is a deadly cancer that physicians struggle to diagnose early because they lack the knowledge to differentiate benign from malignant lesions. Deep machine learning approaches to image analysis offer promise but lack the transparency to be widely adopted as stand-alone diagnostics.

Aim: We aimed to create a transparent machine learning technology (i.e., not deep learning) to discriminate melanomas from nevi in dermoscopy images and an interface for sensory cue integration.

Approach: Imaging biomarker cues (IBCs) fed ensemble machine learning classifier (Eclass) training while raw images fed deep learning classifier training. We compared the areas under the diagnostic receiver operator curves.

Results: Our interpretable machine learning algorithm outperformed the leading deep-learning approach 75% of the time. The user interface displayed only the diagnostic imaging biomarkers as IBCs.

Conclusions: From a translational perspective, Eclass is better than convolutional machine learning diagnosis in that physicians can embrace it faster than black box outputs. Imaging biomarkers cues may be used during sensory cue integration in clinical screening. Our method may be applied to other image-based diagnostic analyses, including pathology and radiology.

Molecular-level insight in supported olefin metathesis catalysts by combining surface organometallic chemistry, high throughput experimentation, and data analysis.

A combination of high-throughput experimentation (HTE), surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) and statistical data analysis provided the platform to analyze silica-grafted Mo imido alkylidene catalysts based on a library of 35 phenols. Overall, these tools allowed for the identification of σ-donor electronic effects and dispersive interactions and as key drivers in a prototypical metathesis reaction, homodimerization of 1-nonene. Univariate and multivariate correlation analysis confirmed the categorization of the catalytic data into two groups, depending on the presence of aryl groups in position of the phenol ligand. The initial activity (TOF) was predominantly correlated to the σ-donor ability of the aryloxy ligands, while the overall catalytic performance (TON) was mainly dependent on attractive dispersive interactions with the used phenol ligands featuring aryl substituents and, in sharp contrast, repulsive dispersive interactions with phenol free of aryl substituents. This work outlines a fast and efficient workflow of gaining molecular-level insight into supported metathesis catalysts and highlights σ-donor ability and noncovalent interactions as crucial properties for designing active d supported metathesis catalysts.

Cross-sectional study of the anthropometric characteristics of children with congenital Zika syndrome up to 12 months of life.

Background: Little is known about physical development of children with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). This study aims to evaluate the anthropometric characteristics of children with CZS up to 12 months.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study developed with 46 children with CZS living in Bahia. We used the Public Health Events Register, Live Births Information System and Childcare Records of Primary Health Care Services. Descriptive analysis was performed by distributing absolute and relative frequencies and median and interquartile range. The Weight/Age (W/A), Length/Age (L/A), Weight/Length (W/L) and Head Circumference/Age (HC/A) indexes were calculated for each month and expressed in z-score values, and the results were evaluated individually and by group average. Values between ≥ - 2 and ≤ 2 standard deviations were used as reference. T-Student and Spearman's Correlation Tests were applied to verify the existence of any relationship between maternal and children's variables with the anthropometric indexes weight/age and height/age at birth and at 3, 6 and 12 months of age.

Results: The studied children had high proportions of low birth weight (23.9%), dysphagia (56.8%) and seizures (53.5%). The mean z-score for the HC/A index at birth was - 3.20 and remained below - 3 z-scores throughout the assessed period. The analysis of the indices equivalent to every single child's anthropometric measurement showed a deficit in 20.4% of the W/A, 39.1% of the L/A, 9.2% of the W/L and 85.7% of the HC/A measurements. Distribution of the mean values of these anthropometric indices revealed a risk of delayed stature growth (L/A < -1 z-score). There was a statistically significant association between L/A at 12 months and dysphagia (p = 0.0148) and a positive correlation between breastfeeding time and W/A. No statistically significant correlation was found between any other tested variables.

Conclusions: We observed a deficit in the HC/A index, which is a common feature in CZS, but also a high proportion of W/A and L/A deficit. The average group z-score highlighted the risk of delay in stature growth for age, which calls attention to the need for health interventions, as this condition exposes them to a higher risk of morbidity and mortality.

Background: Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have been proposed as treatments for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on the basis of in vitro activity and data from uncontrolled studies and small, randomized trials.

Methods: In this randomized, controlled, open-label platform trial comparing a range of possible treatments with usual care in patients hospitalized with Covid-19, we randomly assigned 1561 patients to receive hydroxychloroquine and 3155 to receive usual care. The primary outcome was 28-day mortality.

Results: The enrollment of patients in the hydroxychloroquine group was closed on June 5, 2020, after an interim analysis determined that there was a lack of efficacy. Death within 28 days occurred in 421 patients (27.0%) in the hydroxychloroquine group and in 790 (25.0%) in the usual-care group (rate ratio, 1.09; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97 to 1.23; P = 0.15). Consistent results were seen in all prespecified subgroups of patients. The results suggest that patients in the hydroxychloroquine group were less likely to be discharged from the hospital alive within 28 days than those in the usual-care group (59.6% vs. 62.9%; rate ratio, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.83 to 0.98). Among the patients who were not undergoing mechanical ventilation at baseline, those in the hydroxychloroquine group had a higher frequency of invasive mechanical ventilation or death (30.7% vs. 26.9%; risk ratio, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.27). There was a small numerical excess of cardiac deaths (0.4 percentage points) but no difference in the incidence of new major cardiac arrhythmia among the patients who received hydroxychloroquine.

Conclusions: Among patients hospitalized with Covid-19, those who received hydroxychloroquine did not have a lower incidence of death at 28 days than those who received usual care. Yellow fever transmission in non-human primates, Bahia, Northeastern Brazil.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) causes a clinical syndrome of acute hemorrhagic hepatitis. YFV transmission involves non-human primates (NHP), mosquitoes and humans. By late 2016, Brazil experienced the largest YFV outbreak of the last 100 years, with 2050 human confirmed cases, with 681 cases ending in death and 764 confirmed epizootic cases in NHP. Among affected areas, Bahia state in Northeastern was the only region with no autochthonous human cases. By using next generation sequence approach, we investigated the molecular epidemiology of YFV in NHP in Bahia and discuss what factors might have prevented human cases. We investigated 47 YFV positive tissue samples from NHP cases to generate 8 novel YFV genomes. ML phylogenetic tree reconstructions and automated subtyping tools placed the newly generated genomes within the South American genotype I (SA I). Our analysis revealed that the YFV genomes from Bahia formed two distinct well-supported phylogenetic clusters that emerged most likely of an introduction from Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states. Vegetation coverage analysis performed shows predominantly low to medium vegetation coverage in Bahia state. Together, our findings support the hypothesis of two independent YFV SA-I introductions. We also highlighted the effectiveness of the actions taken by epidemiological surveillance team of the state to prevented human cases.

PVDF was prepared by compression molding, and its phase content/structure was assessed by WAXD, DSC, and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. Next, PVDF samples were aged in bioethanol fuel at 60 °C or annealed in the same temperature by 30 ─ 180 days. Then, the influence of aging/annealing on thermal stability, thermal degradation kinetics, and lifetime of the PVDF was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG), as well as the structure was again examined. The crystallinity of ~41% (from WAXD) or ~49% (from DSC) were identified for unaged PVDF, without significant changes after aging or annealing. This PVDF presented not only one phase, but a mixture of -, - and -phases, - and -phases with more highlighted vibrational bands. Thermal degradation kinetics was evaluated using the non-isothermal Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method. The activation energy ( ) of thermal degradation was calculated for conversion levels of = 5 ─ 50% at constant heating rates (5, 10, 20, and 40 °C min), = 10% was fixed for lifetime estimation. The results indicated that temperature alone does not affect the material, but its combination with bioethanol reduced the onset temperature and of primary thermal degradation. Additionally, the material lifetime decreased until about five decades ( = 25 °C and 90 days of exposition) due to the fluid effect after aging.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is associated with diffuse lung damage. Glucocorticoids may modulate inflammation-mediated lung injury and thereby reduce progression to respiratory failure and death.

Methods: In this controlled, open-label trial comparing a range of possible treatments in patients who were hospitalized with Covid-19, we randomly assigned patients to receive oral or intravenous dexamethasone (at a dose of 6 mg once daily) for up to 10 days or to receive usual care alone. The primary outcome was 28-day mortality. Here, we report the final results of this assessment.

Results: A total of 2104 patients were assigned to receive dexamethasone and 4321 to receive usual care. Overall, 482 patients (22.9%) in the dexamethasone group and 1110 patients (25.7%) in the usual care group died within 28 days after randomization (age-adjusted rate ratio, 0.83; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75 to 0.93; P<0.001). The proportional and absolute between-group differences in mortality varied considerably according to the level of respiratory support that the patients were receiving at the time of randomization. In the dexamethasone group, the incidence of death was lower than that in the usual care group among patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (29.3% vs. 41.4%; rate ratio, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.51 to 0.81) and among those receiving oxygen without invasive mechanical ventilation (23.3% vs. 26.2%; rate ratio, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.72 to 0.94) but not among those who were receiving no respiratory support at randomization (17.8% vs. 14.0%; rate ratio, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.92 to 1.55).

Conclusions: In patients hospitalized with Covid-19, the use of dexamethasone resulted in lower 28-day mortality among those who were receiving either invasive mechanical ventilation or oxygen alone at randomization but not among those receiving no respiratory support. Suitable state bases for nonlinear optical mode conversion protocols.

By considering parity-defined Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) and Hermite-Gaussian (HG) beams as input modes, we present arguments through experimental and theoretical results in order to affirm that using HG modes as bases is more suitable for optical mode conversion than using LG modes. By analyzing the normalized overlap integral and the generated modes, we determine a clear rule for the dominant mode for nonlinear mixing of HG beams, while the same is not possible for LG beams. In addition, examples of optical modal conversion using both HG and LG modes as input beams are demonstrated.

Bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to penguins on the coast of southeastern Brazil.

Bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on São Paulo state coast (southeastern Brazil) was evaluated through the analysis of biliary metabolites in Spheniscus magellanicus (n = 79). The animals analyzed in present study were either found dead during beach monitoring procedures or died at rehabilitation centers. Analyses of naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) metabolites were performed using a high-performance liquid chromatograph equipped with fluorescence detectors. Total metabolite (TM) concentrations ranged from below the method quantification limit to 270 μg g of bile. TM concentrations were mainly composed of NAP metabolites, followed by PHE metabolites. BaP metabolites were detected in only two samples. This is the first study using PAHs metabolites in S. magellanicus to assess the bioavailability of these compounds in coastal regions.

Effectiveness of the mixture of nopal and cassava starch as clarifying substances in water purification: A case study in Colombia.

Aluminum sulfate is one of the most used chemical coagulants in the world, but research has shown that high concentrations of aluminum in the body are associated with neuropathological conditions. Because of this, different alternatives have been evaluated such as natural coagulants, which are considered safe for human health and contain fewer contaminants than chemicals due to their biodegradation properties. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of mixing nopal mucilage and cassava starch for turbidity removal in water purification. In this paper, test jars and the treatment equipment (TA-scale FQ-005/PE manufactured by Generatoris SA de CV of Mexico) was applied in order to measure turbidity and pH parameters before and after the process of coagulation-flocculation, which was applied to water from the Magdalena River in Colombia. Samples from two sampling periods were assessed. One was evaluated during the rainy season and the other was evaluated without precipitation (drought) with initial turbidities of 316 NTU and 80 NTU, respectively. It was found that aluminum sulfate as a coagulant reference obtained better turbidity removal results (up to 99%) as compared to nopal (up to 60.4%), and nopal-starch combination of cassava (up to 67%), indicating that this mixture increases the effectiveness of natural coagulants used individually. Our results indicate that this should be considered as an alternative in the water purification process.

High-intensity resistance training induces changes in cognitive function, but not in locomotor activity or anxious behavior in rats induced to type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disorder that can lead to cognitive decline through impairment of insulin signaling. Resistance training, a type of physical exercise, is a non-pharmacological approach used to improve insulin resistance in T2D. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of high-intensity resistance training (HIRT) over cognitive function, locomotor activity, and anxious behavior in rats induced to T2D. Thirty young adult male wistar rats were distributed into 3 groups (n = 10): Control; dexamethasone (D); and dexamethasone + exercise (DE), that performed the HIRT during 4 weeks. Blood glucose, water intake, and total body fat were measured. Locomotor activity, and anxious behavior where evaluated through the open field task. Cognitive function was assessed through the novel object recognition task. Insulin resistance and neuronal death were evaluated through western blot analysis. Rats induced to T2D had higher blood glucose levels, and consumed more water when compared to control group, but DE had better blood glucose levels than D. Total body fat was reduced in DE compared to D. Locomotor activity, and anxious behavior were not significantly altered. T2D rats which performed HIRT maintained cognitive function, while those induced to T2D that did not exercise developed cognitive decline. DE group showed a reduction in the inhibition of the activation of hippocampal IRS-1 and higher expression of GSk3β phosphorylated in serine compared to D group, revealing insulin signaling impairment, and neuronal death were identified in the hippocampus of D group. Lifestyle intervention through the regular practice of HIRT plays a fundamental role in the treatment of T2D preventing cognitive decline.

Conversion of haemodialysis patients from iron sucrose to iron isomaltoside: a real-world experience.

Background: Anaemia is common in haemodialysis (HD) patients and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Intravenous (IV) iron combined with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) is the mainstay treatment of anaemia in these patients. The comparative efficacy and risk of adverse events with IV iron preparations have been assessed in only a few trials.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study in 2 centres designed to compare the safety and efficacy of iron sucrose (IS-Venofer®) versus iron isomaltoside (IIM-Diafer®) in haemodialysis patients. The study included patients currently on dialysis and receiving Venofer who were switched to Diafer® and monitored for at least 12 months for each iron preparation.

Results: A total of 190 patients were included and had a mean age of 65.8 years (SD ± 15.5). Non-inferiority was confirmed with no change in mean haemoglobin per mg of iron administered over a 12-month period. In total there were 41,295 prescriptions of iron isomaltoside and 14,685 of iron sucrose with no difference in the number of reported adverse events during the study period (7 each, none were severe). There was a statistically significant effect on Hb over time after conversion, including adjustment for multiple comparisons. There were significant improvements in ferritin over time, which remained at 6 months (P < 0.01). The weekly iron dose was similar after adjustment (P = 0.02). The EPO dose did not differ significantly after month 0 in patients switched to IIM.

Conclusions: This study demonstrates the comparative safety and efficacy of iron isomaltoside versus iron sucrose, with similar dosing schedules in dialysis patients. Iron isomaltoside is non-inferior to iron sucrose in maintaining Hb in patients on regular haemodialysis/haemodiafiltration with no difference in the number of reported adverse events.

Laparoscopic Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) Inguinal Hernia Repair Using Fibrin Glue for Fixation of the Mesh and Peritoneum Closure.

Purpose: The aim of this case series is to describe our ongoing experience of laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair using Tisseel fibrin glue for the fixation of the mesh and peritoneum closure.

Materials And Methods: From October 2018, patients who underwent laparoscopic TAPP for unilateral inguinal hernia repair using Tisseel fibrin glue to secure the mesh and the peritoneum, with a minimum of 1 year of follow-up, have been included. Patient demographics, main operative findings, and main postoperative outcomes were analyzed prospectively using a visual analgesic scale (VAS) and a modified short-form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire.

Results: A total of 26 patients have been included and none have been lost during the follow-up. The mean operative time was 92.1 minutes and there was no conversion. The median hospital stay was 1.03 day (range, 1 to 2). The mean follow-up duration was 19.3 months (range, 12 to 26 mo) and none had a recurrence. The postoperative VAS score at 1, 7, 30 days, and 6 months from surgery was 3.18, 1.52, 0, and 0, respectively. The mean SF-36 score at 1, 6, and 12 months from surgery was 90.09, 94.8, and 05.1, respectively.

Conclusions: The use of fibrin glue for TAPP inguinal hernia repair is a safe and feasible technique with favorable results. Larger comparative randomized studies are needed to confirm these early results.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of carvacrol in the respiratory system: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Carvacrol is a monoterpene present in the essential oil of a number of plants and has been widely used in traditional medicine because it is considered to have a range of therapeutic effects including in relation to respiratory disease. To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of carvacrol when used in the treatment of respiratory disorders. A comprehensive literature search using Scopus, MEDLINE-PubMed, Cochrane and Web of Science was undertaken. Papers related to the anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties of carvacrol in the treatment of an injury in the respiratory system in in vivo studies and published in the period up to and including August 2019. A total of 152 studies were initially identified, with only 17 meeting the inclusion criteria. Five of the studies were performed in humans, and 12 were performed in rodents. Among the 17 studies included in the systematic review, we performed the meta-analysis with nine of the studies with animals. Carvacrol had a positive effect on the reduction of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-8 and malondialdehyde (MDA); however, the analysis indicated that carvacrol had no effect on IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), probably due to the methodological quality of the studies and their heterogeneity. Current evidence supports the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of carvacrol, but its relationship with the reduction of some inflammatory mediators in animals with lung injury needs further elucidation.

Measuring the topological charge of coherence vortices through the geometry of the far-field cross-correlation function.

Determination of orbital angular momentum of optical vortex beams has attracted the attention of many researchers over the last few years. For some applications, it is convenient to use a partially coherent vortex beam because of its robustness. In this work, we developed a method to measure the topological charge of a partially coherent vortex beam. Our method relies simply in the measurement of the minimum radius of a zero contour of the modulus of the cross-correlation function and in the measurement of the full width at half maximum of its central spot.

Heparin Attenuates Visceral Apoptosis in a Swine Model of Hemorrhagic Shock and Reperfusion Injury.

Background: The use of unfractionated heparin in hypovolemic shock, aortic clamping, and visceral reperfusion is still not established, despite evidence of inhibition of early cell damage. This study investigated the potential protective effect of unfractionated heparin on hepatic and renal apoptosis in a porcine ischemia and reperfusion model.

Methods: Twenty-one male swine (Sus scrofa) were divided into 3 groups: sham (n = 5), heparin (n = 8), and nonheparin (n = 8). The heparin and nonheparin groups underwent hypovolemic shock for 30 min, supraceliac aortic clamping for 1 h and reperfusion for 3 h. Unfractionated heparin 200 mg/kg was administered to the heparin group during aortic clamping. Hemodynamic and laboratory parameters were monitored, including aminotransferase and serum urea. Histological lesion scores were applied to hematoxylin and eosin-stained liver and kidney sections. Apoptosis quantification was performed by caspase-3 immunohistochemistry.

Results: The proposed model caused a severe cardiocirculatory disturbance in the heparin and nonheparin groups, observed by the carotid-femoral pressure gradient and lactic acidosis. There was no significant difference in hemodynamic and laboratory parameters between these two groups. The mean values of liver and renal histological lesion scores did not present any significant differences. Caspase-3 immunoexpression was lower in the heparin than the nonheparin group for both liver and kidney.

Conclusions: Attenuation of liver and kidney cell apoptosis in pigs undergoing systemic heparinization suggests a potential use for heparin in modulating cell death under critical hemodynamic conditions.

Multivariate analysis applied for correlations between analytical measures and sensory profile of goat milk chocolate.

The aim of this work was to characterize goat milk chocolates with different concentrations of cocoa (35%, 45%, 55% and 65%) and apply correlations between sensory features and analytical measures. The chocolates were evaluated through moisture, ashes, fat content, protein, acidity, pH, water activity, texture, instrumental color and sensory profile. The correlations showed that the brown color can be represented by the chromaticity coordinates a* and b* and the flavor attributes (sweet taste and bitter taste), by the ashes analysis, fat content and pH. Canonic scores superior to 0.5 indicate chocolates with better acceptance.

Sorting of spatially incoherent optical vortex modes.

Coherent optical vortices have promising applications in quantum and classical optical communication. They add new degrees of freedom to code information. In this context, to implement a tool enabling sorting of spatially multiplexed vortex states is fundamental. By other hand, spatially incoherent vortices can be more robust in propagation through noise media, such as turbulent atmosphere or obstacles that block part of the light. Therefore, in this work we propose directly applying a high-resolution sorting scheme to spatially incoherent vortex states.

Study of the structural properties of goat's milk chocolates with different concentrations of cocoa mass.

The objective of this study was to assess the microstructural characteristics of goat's milk chocolates formulated with different concentrations of cocoa mass by rheological measurements and microscopy. For rheological characterization, rotational and oscillatory tests were performed, while crystal morphology was observed by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and 3D optical profilometer. It was verified that the chocolates presented pseudoplastic and thixotropic behavior. The Herschel-Bulkley model adequately described the flow behavior of the formulations. In the oscillatory tests, it was found that the tangent δ (loss) decreased from 0.33 to 0.17 as a function of the increase in cocoa mass concentration. The creep recovery tests were consistent with the other rheological tests. The analysis of AFM and profilometer indicated that there are different microscopic pores on the surface of the chocolates, and that with the increase in the concentration of cocoa mass, it has a structure with greater interactions.

Noncovalent Interactions Drive the Efficiency of Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene Catalysts for Olefin Metathesis.

High-throughput experimentation and multivariate modeling allow identification of noncovalent interactions (NCIs) in monoaryloxy-pyrrolide Mo imido alkylidene metathesis catalysts prepared as a key driver for high activity in a representative metathesis reaction (homodimerization of 1-nonene). Statistical univariate and multivariate modeling categorizes catalytic data from 35 phenolic ligands into two groups, depending on the substitution in the position of the phenol ligand. The catalytic activity descriptor TON correlates predominantly with attractive NCIs when phenols bear aryl substituents and, conversely, with repulsive NCIs when the phenol has no aryl substituents. Energetic span analysis is deployed to relate the observed NCI and the cycloreversion metathesis step such that aryloxide ligands with no aryls mainly impact the energy of metallacyclobutane intermediates (SP/TBP isomers), whereas aryloxides with pendant aryls influence the transition state energy for the cycloreversion step. While the electronic effects from the aryloxide ligands also play a role, our work outlines how NCIs may be exploited for the design of improved d metathesis catalysts.

First report of Leishmania (Viannia) lindenbergi causing tegumentary leishmaniasis in the Brazilian western Amazon region.

Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (TL) in the Brazilian Amazon region is associated with several Leishmania species. In this report, we describe two cases of TL related to Leishmania lindenbergi occurring in different locations of Rondônia state. After clinical diagnosis, lesion samples were collected for parasitological diagnoses via direct microscopic visualization, parasite isolation, and PCR. PCR reactions were positive in both clinical samples. Parasite isolation was possible for both patients, and isolates were submitted to species identification by isoenzyme electrophoresis and DNA sequencing. This report is the first to describe human infections caused by L. lindenbergi since the initial description and record of human infection by this species in 2002.

Method to define non-diffracting optical beams mimicking the shape of simple plane curves.

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a method to define non-diffracting beams with different geometries. Our findings constitute an alternative to current methods for finding non-diffracting beams, which rely on the solution of the wave equation in a given coordinate system that has a limited number of possibilities or uses a complicated and time-consuming optimization algorithm. Therefore, the method is easier to follow, because it does not require optimization and allows one to obtain non-diffracting beams mimicking the geometry of simple plane curves. The method could find applications in manipulation of matter with optical waves, such as colloidal and living particles, and in quantum, nonlinear, and atom optics.

Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) and Triggering Receptor-Expressed Myeloid Cell (TREM-1) Levels Are Associated with Cardiometabolic Risk in Nonobese, Clinically Healthy, and Young Adults.

Oxidative and inflammatory substances play an important role in the genesis of processes related to cardiometabolic risk. High levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) and of triggering receptor-expressed myeloid cells (TREM-1) are associated with cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. In this study, we evaluate the association of the plasma concentrations of Ox-LDL and serum levels of circulating TREM-1 (sTREM-1) with the components of cardiometabolic risk (CMR) and other associated risk parameters. Although the individuals in this study were young, nonobese, and did not have signs, symptoms, and diagnosis of diseases, they already presented components of CMR. Ox-LDL lipid fraction correlated positively with CMR-related markers: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage, total cholesterol, LDL-c, VLDL-c, triglycerides, atherogenic cholesterol, and atherogenic index. Among these parameters, atherogenic cholesterol had a greater predictive effect for Ox-LDL alterations. Individuals with higher serum concentrations of sTREM-1 presented higher values for BMI, WC, triglycerides, VLDL-c, and atherogenic cholesterol. WC showed an effect on the association between the sTREM-1's inflammatory response and the components of CMR. The association of oxidative and inflammatory markers with anthropometric parameters and atherogenic cholesterol in nonobese, clinically healthy, and young individuals suggests the importance of early evaluation of these markers in order to prevent future cardiac events.
