Introduction

From my undergraduate degree in neurobiology, I have been hooked on the study of the nervous system ever since. Graduating in 1978 I went on to a PhD investigating righting reflexes in lobsters followed by postdocs in Edinburgh working on Drosphila neurobiology and biomechanics of flight, and then Sheffield working on neural control of colour patterning in octopus and other cephalopods. I then won a Royal Society (1983) University Research Fellowship which I held form 10 years from 1986-1996 initially at Ednibrgh but moved to Manchester in 1990. Here I started working with heamatologists to investigate neural control of haemopoiesis. I also started working with Carys Bannister, a neurosurgeon who was researching into hydrocephalus. This study has expanded into a major investigating identifying the unique cerebral folate system and its exquisite sensitivity to cerebrospinal fluid drainage insufficiency. This in turn led to the discovery that a combination of natural folates (but NOT folic acid) could prevent fetal onset hydrocephalus and also treat it. Neural control of the host defence and immune system remains an underlying interest and I believe that a revolution in health care may emerge once the fixation on drug discoveries relaxes and opens the field to investigate cause rather than consequence of disease and illness.
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, of The Royal Microscopical Society and The Royal Society of Biology. I am a Visiting Professor at The Institute of Child Health, Lahore, Pakistan.
