Expression of CEACAM1 and CD105 in Renal Cell Carcinoma and Its Correlation with Microvessel Density.

We investigated expression of carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) and endoglin (CD105) in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and its potential role in predicting tumor growth and progression. A total of 47 RCC specimens and 15 adjacent normal kidney tissues were obtained. Expression of CEACAM1 and CD105 was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Microvessel density (MVD) was counted under the microscope by labeling the endothelial cells with biomarker CD34. The positivity of CEACAM1 expression in RCC (42.6%) was significantly lower than that in the normal kidney (73.%, P = 0.038). In contrast, the positivity of CD105 expression was significantly higher in RCC (78.7%) compared to that in the normal kidney (46.7%, P = 0.017). The expression level of CD105 in 47 RCC patients was significantly associated with the clinical stages of RCC (P < 0.05) but not with gender, age, tumor size, or histologic grade. Average MVD in RCC (78.05 ± 16.57) was significantly higher than that in normal tissue (43.62 ± 12.37, P < 0.05), and was significantly higher in RCC patients with advanced histologic grades (P < 0.05) or clinical stages (P < 0.01). In addition, MVD was significantly correlated with CD105 but negatively correlated with CEACAM1. Our findings suggest that down-regulation of CEACAM1 may promote angiogenesis in RCC, and that up-regulation of CD105 may promote RCC progress. MVD may be an indicator of RCC malignancy.

[Clinical efficacy of Paroxetine combined with mid-frequency electrical pulse acupoint stimulation for premature ejaculation].

Objective: To investigate the clinical value of Paroxetine combined with mid-frequency electrical pulse acupoint stimulation (EPAS) in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE).

Methods: Totally 69 PE patients were equally assigned to receive oral Paroxetine 20 mg/d, mid-frequency EPAS, or oral Paroxetine 10 mg/d combined with mid-frequency EPAS (P + EPAS) , all for 8 weeks. We obtained the intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) and Chinese Index of Premature Ejaculation (CIPE-5) scores of the patients before and after treatment, and compared adverse reactions among the three groups of patients.

Results: One patient of the Paroxetine group gave up treatment because of abdominal pain and nausea. Compared with the baseline, the patients in the Paroxetine, EPAS, and P + EPAS groups all showed markedly increased IELT ([0.92 ± 0.11] vs [4.07 ± 0.11] min, P < 0.01; [0.92 ± 0.12] VS [2.78 ± 0.17] min P < 0.05; [0.91 ± 0.09] vs [5.31 ± 0.13], P < 0.01) and decreased CIPE-5 scores (12.5 ± 3.0 vs 22.0 ± 2.1, P < 0.01; 12.8 ± 2.9 vs 19.5 ± 1.9, P > 0.05; 13.1 ± 2.8 vs 25.2 ± 2.1, P 0.01), with statistically significant differences between the P + EPAS group and the other two (P < 0.05). The total effectiveness rate was 95.7% in the P + EPAS group, remarkably higher than in the Paroxetine (72.7%, P < 0.05) and the EPAS group (47.8, P < 0.01).

Conclusion: Oral Paroxetine combined with mid-frequency EPAS has a higher safety and efficacy than either Paroxetine or EPAS alone in the treatment of PE.

Long-term performance and microbial ecology of a two-stage PN-ANAMMOX process treating mature landfill leachate.

Long-term performance of a two-stage partial nitritation (PN)-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) process treating mature landfill leachate was investigated. Stable partial nitritation performance was achieved in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using endpoint pH control, providing an effluent with a ratio of NO2(-)-N/NH4(+)-N at 1.23 ± 0.23. High rate nitrogen removal over 4 kg N/m(3)/d was observed in the ANAMMOX reactor in the first three months. However, during long-term operation, the ANAMMOX reactor can only stably operate under nitrogen load of 1 kg N/m(3)/d, with 85 ± 1% of nitrogen removal. The ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the PN-SBR were mainly affiliated to Nitrosomonas sp. IWT514, Nitrosomonas eutropha and Nitrosomonas eutropha, the anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) in the ANAMMOX reactor were mainly affiliated to Kuenenia stuttgartiensis.

[Cigarette smoke affects sexual function of male rats].

Objective: To study the effect of cigarette smoke on the sexual function of male rats.

Methods: Based on Ozyurt's smoking model, we equally divided 30 male adult Sprague-Dawley rats into a control and a smoking group, and exposed the latter to cigarette smoke for 60 days. A week before the end of the experiment, we added 5 female rats to each group and observed their mating through 24-hour video surveillance. Sixty days later, all the rats were killed for the determination of the level of testosterone (T) in the plasma and the activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the corpus cavernosum, and Masson-dyeing image analysis of the penile tissue.

Results: Compared with the controls, the rats in the smoking group showed a significant reduction in the times of mating, the level of plasma T (P < 0.05) and the activity of NOS in the penile cavernous tissue (P < 0.05), but a slight increase in the collagen fibers and obvious changes in the blood sinuses.

Conclusion: Cigarette smoke seriously affected penile erection in the experimental rats. The decrease in plasma T, NOS activity and the area of smooth muscle may be an important mechanism underlying their erectile dysfunction.
