Introduction

Dr. Giuseppe Rengo was born in Naples (Italy) on 30/11/1978. In 2002, he took his degree in Medicine (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Naples "Federico II", discussing a thesis entitled: "Transferrin receptor in hereditary ataxia". Starting November 2002 Dr. Rengo is medical doctor in the Department of Cardiology at the "Salvatore Maugeri" Foundation – IRCCS Institute of Telese Terme (BN). In 2006 Dr. Rengo took degree with excellence in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Naples "Federico II". He took his PhD in "Clinical Physiopathology and Experimental Medicine" at the University of Naples "Federico II" defending his thesis on the effects of adrenal GRK2 lowering as an underlying mechanism for the beneficial sympathetic effects of exercise training in heart failure. His interests focused on the gene therapy-mediated restoration of G-protein coupled receptor signaling disregulation occurring during heart failure (in particular on cardiovascular and adrenal beta-adrenergic receptor and angiotensin-1 receptor signalling). Starting October 2012, he is Adjunct Assinstant Professor at Temple University, Philadelphia. In 2015 Dr. Rengo took degree with excellence in Cardiology at the at the University of Naples "Federico II". From December 2015, Dr. Rengo is Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the Department of Translational Medical Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II. Dr. Rengo is member of several scientific societies such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) study group on Myocardial Function. He is in the Editorial Board of PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Physiology, Dataset Paper in Biology, Cell Biology and Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. Rengo is Abstract Grader for the abstract selection for the scientific sessions of the American Heart Association and reviewer for the Medical Research Council, Swiss National Science Foundatio, ZonMw, TOP subside 2015 (Netherlands). He is author of more than 90 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (Total Impact Factor: 480; H-index: 27; Total citation number in Scopus: 3450).
His work is based around heart failure and the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of signaling through cardiovascular adrenergic receptors, the study of G-protein coupled receptor function and signaling, and heart failure gene therapy. His recent studies are investigating into the use of novel viral-mediated myocardial gene delivery for use in congestive heart failure, with an aim at developing reproducible surgical means of gene therapy. He is also involved in research to understand novel molecular signaling mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of exercise training and beta-blocker therapy in animal model of heart failure and aging. He is studying new molecular mechanism responsible of neurohormonal overdrive observed in heart failure. In particular he reported the first demonstration of a molecular mechanism for sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity in heart failure by identifying adrenal GRK2 activity as a new sympatholytic target. He described a new interaction between ?-1 adrenergic receptor and sphingosine 1 phosphate receptor 1 that has a relevant role in HF pathogenesis and progression. Inhibition of this GRK2-dependent interaction is therapeutic in HF. More recently, Giuseppe has demonstrated that blood GRK2 levels can independently predict prognosis in HF patients, providing a new prospective for the clinical utility of GRK2 in HF. Finally, he has provided the first evidence of a direct correlation between increased epicardial adipose tissue thickness and cardiac sympathetic denervation, demonstrating that epicardial adipose tissue is a relevant source of catecholamine.
