Three new terpenoids from .

Crotonpenoids A and B, Two Highly Modified Clerodane Diterpenoids with a Tricyclo[7.2.1.0]dodecane Core from : Isolation, Structural Elucidation, and Biomimetic Semisynthesis.

Crotonpenoids A () and B (), two highly modified clerodane diterpenoids featuring a new 10-(butan-2-yl)-1,6,12-trimethyltricyclo[7.2.1.0]dodecane skeleton, were isolated from the leaves and twigs of . Their structures including the absolute configurations were determined by spectroscopic analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and biomimetic semisynthesis. Compounds and exhibited an agonistic effect on pregnane X receptor at 10 μM.

Cytotoxic Pregnane Steroidal Glycosides from Chonemorpha megacalyx.

Three new C pregnane steroids, chonemorphols A-C (1, 3, and 4), 11 new C steroidal glycosides, chonemorphosides A-K (2 and 5-14), and 11 known compounds (15-25) were obtained from the vines and leaves of Chonemorpha megacalyx Pierre. Their structures were established using extensive spectroscopic data. The X-ray crystallographic data of 1 and 3 permitted definition of their absolute configurations. Notably, 1 and 2 possessed an uncommon 6/5/6/5/5-fused steroidal ring system. Compound 7 displayed significant cytotoxicity against several cancer cell lines with IC values of 2.0-3.6 μM.

BaInZnS- nZnS: An Inorganic Composite System with Interface Phase-Matching Tuned for High-Performance Infrared Nonlinear Optical Materials.

Mid- and far-infrared nonlinear optical (MFIR NLO) materials are important in modern laser technologies. However, it is very challenging to develop materials that can achieve a subtle balance between the key requirements, such as large NLO response, high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), wide IR transparency, and phase-matching. In this work, a new wide IR transparency (0.38-15.3 μm) NLO crystal BaInZnS (SS26) is synthesized. Further, its composite system BaInZnS- nZnS is synthesized by eutectic reaction. In particular, BaInZnS-14ZnS (SS40) shows excellent balanced NLO performance that includes a large band gap of 3.05 eV, high LIDT (13.3 × AgGaS), large second harmonic generation (SHG) response (2.1 × AgGaS at 2050 nm, 5.2 × KDP at 1064 nm), and wide optical transmission window (0.37-15.4 μm). Importantly, the phase-matching condition is realized for SS40 by interfaces formed between the crystal face (112) of matrix SS26 and the crystal face (111) of reinforcement cubic ZnS by topological chemical reaction, and the NLO performance can be tuned by different concentrations of ZnS. First-principles simulations are employed to study NLO properties of SS26 and the interfaces. This work demonstrates that SS40 is a promising MFIR NLO material, and tuning components of the composite material system is a useful way to develop new MFIR NLO materials with excellent comprehensive performance.

[Lymphatic filariasis in Hubei Province: from prevailing to elimination].

Lymphatic filariasis used to highly prevalent in 69 counties (cities) with 29 million people at the risk of infection in Hubei Province. There were 2 million people infected either by B. malayi or W. bancrofti that 1.6 million microfilaremia cases and 0.4 million chronic patients. The average rate of microfilaremia among population was 5.94%. Anopheles sinensis and Culex quinquefasciatus were the principal transmitting vectors. Since 1970s, with the strategy of taking elimination of infection source as a major focus, the average rate of the microfilaremia reduced to 0.048% with a village as the unit in 1988, and reached the standard of transmission interruption. With continuous surveillance for over a decade, the province reached the goal of filariasis elimination in 2001. This paper reviews the prevalence, control and elimination process of filariasis in Hubei Province since 1950s.

Nurses' knowledge of high-alert medications: instrument development and validation.

Aim: This paper is a report of the development and validation of an instrument to measure nurses' knowledge of high-alert medications and to analyse known administration errors.

Background: Insufficient knowledge is a factor in nurses' drug administration errors. Most errors do not harm patients, but incorrect administration of high-alert medications can result in serious consequences. Sufficient knowledge about high-alert medications is vital.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2006 in Taiwan using a questionnaire developed from literature review and expert input, and validated by subject experts and two pilot studies. Section 1 of the questionnaire (20 true-false questions) evaluated nurses' knowledge of high-alert medications and section 2 was designed to analyse known administration errors. Snowball sampling and descriptive statistics were used.

Findings: A total of 305 nurses participated, giving a 79.2% response rate (305/385). The correct answer rate for section 1 was 56.5%, and nurses' working experience contributed to scores. Only 3.6% of nurses considered themselves to have sufficient knowledge about high-alert medications, 84.6% hoped to gain more training, and the leading obstacle reported was insufficient knowledge (75.4%). A total of 184 known administration errors were identified, including wrong drug (33.7%) and wrong dose (32.6%); 4.9% (nine cases; 9/184) resulted in serious consequences.

Conclusion: The questionnaire was valid and reliable. Evidence-based results strongly suggest that nurses have insufficient knowledge about high-alert medications and could benefit from additional education, particularly associated with intravenous bolus administration of high-alert medications. Further research to validate the instrument is needed.
