Complete and partial replacement of the inferior vena cava with autologous peritoneum in cancer surgery.

Resection of the inferior vena cava may be required in the courses of oncological surgeries for the tumors originating from or invading it. Management of the remaining defect depends on the extension of the resection. Partial or complete replacement of the inferior vena cava, with a patch or interposition graft, may be required. Standard techniques for the reconstruction with a prosthetic material or the autologous veins can be associated with the prosthetic graft infection, high cost, long-standing anticoagulation, technical difficulties, and/or need for extra incisions. The use of the autologous peritoneum represents an easy and inexpensive alternative for the partial and complete inferior vena cava reconstructions.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of antenatal corticoid in preterm twin and single pregnancies: a multicenter cohort study.

Background: The effects of antenatal corticosteroids (ANSs) on twins are not well established.

Objective: To determine the impact of ANS use according to the number of fetuses.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of newborns between 23 and 33 weeks of gestational age, birth weight from 400 to 1499 g, without malformations, delivered at 20 public university hospitals from 2010 to 2014.Exposed group: Received ANS (any time, any dose) and no exposed group: no received ANS. Analysis of birth conditions and clinical outcomes. Association of variables, relative risks, and 95% confidence intervals estimated from the adjustment of log-binomial regression models.

Results: About 7165 premature infants were analyzed: 5167 singleton, 937 twins, and 104 triplets. Characteristics of gestations with one, two, or three fetuses not receiving ANS were similar. Reduced hemodynamic instability in single and twins gestations in the first 72 h were observed (Adj Twins = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.69-0.86) (Adj Singles = 0.79; 95% CI = 0.62-0.99). Reduced peri-intraventricular hemorrhage (Adj Twins = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.36-0.78) (Adj singles = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.36-0.78); and early sepsis reduction on single and triplex gestations (Adj triplex = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.27-0.94) (Adj single = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.27-0.94) were observed.

Conclusions: This study demonstrates ANS produces an important protective factor for severe intraventricular hemorrhage and hemodynamic instability in single and multiple pregnancies. ANS had a protective effect on death and birth conditions improvement just in single gestations. Regarding respiratory aspects was not observed the protective effect in the single or multiple gestations.

Ferulic acid amide derivatives with varying inhibition of amyloid-β oligomerization and fibrillization.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized, in part, by the misfolding, oligomerization and fibrillization of amyloid-β (Aβ). Evidence suggests that the mechanisms underpinning Aβ oligomerization and subsequent fibrillization are distinct, and may therefore require equally distinct therapeutic approaches. Prior studies have suggested that amide derivatives of ferulic acid, a natural polyphenol, may combat multiple AD pathologies, though its impact on Aβ aggregation is controversial. We designed and synthesized a systematic library of amide derivatives of ferulic acid and evaluated their anti-oligomeric and anti-fibrillary capacities independently. Azetidine tethered, triphenyl derivatives were the most potent anti-oligomeric agents (compound 2i: IC = 1.8 µM ± 0.73 µM); notably these were only modest anti-fibrillary agents (20.57% inhibition of fibrillization), and exemplify the poor correlation between anti-oligomeric/fibrillary activities. These data were subsequently codified in an in silico QSAR model, which yielded a strong predictive model of anti-Aβ oligomeric activity (κ = 0.919 for test set; κ = 0.737 for validation set).

Association between endothelial nitric oxide synthase and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system polymorphisms, blood pressure and training status in normotensive/pre-hypertension and hypertensive older adults: a pilot study.

Variations in blood pressure (BP) are, in part, genetically determined and some polymorphisms of renin-angiotensin- aldosterone system (RAAS) and synthase of endothelial nitric oxide (eNOS) have been related to hypertension (HT). Conversely, physical exercise is considered a non-pharmacological tool for HT control, treatment, and prevention. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between eNOS and RAAS polymorphisms, their epistatic interaction, and the respective humoral factors in the BP control in normotensive/pre-hypertension and hypertensive older adults and how this relationship can be modulated by training status (TS) level.A total of 155 older adults (66.94 ± 6.83 years old) performed the following evaluations: AAHPERD battery test to determine the general functional fitness index (GFFI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), blood collection for DNA extraction, analysis of eNOS gene polymorphisms rs2070744; rs61722009 and rs1799983 and RAAS polymorphisms rs699; rs1799752 and rs5186, and quantification of ACE activity (Fluorimetric Assay) and nitrite concentration (Chemiluminescence Method).Good TS level appears to exert greater influence on SBP for G2 and G3 (G1: 125.79 ± 14.03/ G2: 119.91 ± 11.72G3: 119.71 ± 10.85) and on NO for G3 (G1: 0.42 ± 0.25/ G2: 0.54 ± 0.45/ G3: 0.71 ± 0.52). No associations were observed between eNOS and RAAS polymorphisms, but the epistasis was identified between eNOS polymorphism, rs2070744, and RAAS polymorphism, rs699, revealing a statistically significant interaction ( = .0235) with training score of 0.63, a training test accuracy of 0.61 and a cross-validation consistency of 10/10. This result suggests an increased risk of hypertension.

Molecular and serological characterization of pathogenic Leptospira spp. isolated from symptomatic dogs in a highly endemic area, Brazil.

Background: Leptospirosis is an endemic zoonosis in Brazil, with a great impact on human and animal health. Although dogs are frequently infected by pathogenic Leptospira, the current epidemiological understanding of canine leptospirosis is mainly based on serological tests that predict the infecting serogroup/serovar. Thus, the present study aimed at identifying the causative agent for severe cases of canine leptospirosis in a highly endemic area through the isolation and characterization of the isolated strains.

Results: Urine, serum and blood samples were collected from 31 dogs with suspected acute leptospirosis treated at the Veterinary Hospital Service of Santo Amaro University between 2018 and 2019. Acute infection was confirmed in 17 dogs (54.8%) by the associated use of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Microscopic Agglutination (MAT) and bacteriological culture. Eleven dogs (35.5%) had titers ≥800, with the most frequent serogroups being Autumnalis and Icterohaemorrhagiae (n = 4 each) and Canicola (n = 2). Leptospires were recovered from four dogs, and Multilocus Sequence Analysis (MLSA) revealed infection caused by L. interrogans, which were further characterized as serogroups Canicola (n = 1) and Icterohaemorrhagiae (n = 3).

Conclusion: The identity of the isolates and serological pattern of MAT suggest that dogs are highly exposed to the serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae and Canicola, also indicating possible circulation of serogroups not yet isolated in Brazil, notably serogroup Autumnalis. Our findings also reinforce the usefulness of using multiple diagnostic approaches to confirm acute canine leptospirosis.
