Full set of piezo-optic and elasto-optic coefficients of CaTaGaSiO crystals at room temperature.

The photoelasticity of the (CTGS) crystal was studied by an interferometric method based on a single-pass Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The maximum number of sample orientations for the piezo-optic experiments was applied to prove accuracy in the determination of the piezo-optic coefficients. Based on the matrices of the piezo-optic coefficients and the elastic stiffness coefficients, all the coefficients of the elastic-optic matrix are calculated. For the highest coefficient, the acousto-optic efficiency is evaluated. The results obtained for CTGS are compared with the corresponding results for (langasite) crystals. The highest acousto-optic figure of merit of CTGS =1.66⋅10/ is two and three times higher, compared with langasite and strontium borate, respectively, which are often used for acousto-optic modulation of light in the ultraviolet spectral range.

Experimental determination of full matrices of the piezo-optic and elasto-optic coefficients for PbGeO crystals.

We determine full matrices of piezo-optic and elasto-optic coefficients for lead germanate crystals, , using Dixon-Cohen and interferometric methods. Two different types of samples are studied, single- and multi-domain. We show that the correct data for the crystals can be obtained only with single-domain samples, since the domain structure induces a number of features that make the final results unreliable. We demonstrate that the acousto-optic figures of merit reach high-enough values at the isotropic acousto-optic interactions with longitudinal acoustic waves propagating along the principal and axes (63×10 and 37×10/), respectively. At the same time, the efficiency of the acousto-optic interactions with transverse acoustic waves is low. The same is true concerning anisotropic acousto-optic diffraction, since the appropriate elasto-optic coefficients are small enough.

Piezo-, elasto- and acousto-optic properties of TlAsS crystals.

Complete matrices of piezo-optic and elasto-optic tensors are experimentally determined for TlAsS crystals. It is revealed that the piezo-optic coefficients are very high, ∼10  N/m in the order of magnitude. This implies that TlAsS can be referred to the best piezo-optic materials. The same concerns the elasto-optic coefficients, of which absolute values are in the interval 0.28-0.54. It is also found that, at the anisotropic and isotropic interactions with the slowest transverse and longitudinal acoustic waves, the acousto-optic figure of merit reaches extremely high values (1.99×10  s/kg and 9.45×10  s/kg, respectively). In other words, the TlAsS crystals can be referred to as one of the best acousto-optic materials for the visible and infrared spectral ranges.

Global maxima for the acousto-optic effect in SrB4O7 crystals.

For the first time, the global maxima of the acousto-optic interaction are theoretically determined for biaxial SrB4O7 crystals by the extreme surfaces method. As it is shown, the highest value of the acousto-optic figure-of-merit M2 is equal to 6.3×10-16  s3/kg and achieved in the case of the isotropic diffraction of the electromagnetic wave propagating in the [010] direction on the fast quasi-transversal acoustic wave.

Piezo-optic, photoelastic, and acousto-optic properties of SrB4O7 crystals.

On the basis of studies of the piezo-optic effect, it has been shown that SrB(4)O(7) crystals can be used as efficient acousto-optic materials in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral range. The full matrices of piezo-optic and photoelastic coefficients have been experimentally obtained for these crystals. The acousto-optic figure of merit and the diffraction efficiency have been estimated for both the visible and deep ultraviolet spectral ranges.
