Effects of Low-Intensity Transcranial Pulsed Ultrasound Treatment in a Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease. One of the main pathology markers of AD is the beta-amyloid plaques (βA) created from residues of the badly processed amyloid precursor protein. The accumulation of these plaques can induce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress and impair antioxidant mechanisms, culminating in cognitive and memory deficits. New therapies are necessary to treat AD as the approved drugs do not treat the progress of the disease. Transcranial low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) affects brain metabolism and could be tested as a treatment for AD. This study was aimed at evaluating the LIPUS treatment in a model of AD induced by βA intracerebroventricularly (ICV) and its effects on learning memory, neurotrophins, neuroinflammation and oxidative status. βA was administered ICV 24 h before the start of a 5-wk LIPUS treatment. The treatment with LIPUS improved recognition memory, as well as increasing nerve growth factor β and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in the hippocampus and cortex. There was a decrease in protein damage in the hippocampus treated with LIPUS. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress were not present in the AD model used. The results indicated that LIPUS is a novel and promising adjuvant strategy for treatment of the late stage of AD.

Mild Effects of Sunscreen Agents on a Marine Flatfish: Oxidative Stress, Energetic Profiles, Neurotoxicity and Behaviour in Response to Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles and Oxybenzone.

UV filters are potentially harmful to marine organisms. Given their worldwide dissemination and the scarcity of studies on marine fish, we evaluated the toxicity of an organic (oxybenzone) and an inorganic (titanium dioxide nanoparticles) UV filter, individually and in a binary mixture, in the turbot (). Fish were intraperitoneally injected and a multi-level assessment was carried out 3 and 7 days later. Oxybenzone and titanium dioxide nanoparticles induced mild effects on turbot, both isolated and in mixture. Neither oxidative stress (intestine, liver and kidney) nor neurotoxicity (brain) was found. However, liver metabolic function was altered after 7 days, suggesting the impairment of the aerobic metabolism. An increased motility rate in oxybenzone treatment was the only behavioural alteration (day 7). The intestine and liver were preferentially targeted, while kidney and brain were unaffected. Both infra- and supra-additive interactions were perceived, with a toxicodynamic nature, resulting either in favourable or unfavourable toxicological outcomes, which were markedly dependent on the organ, parameter and post-injection time. The combined exposure to the UV filters did not show a consistent increment in toxicity in comparison with the isolated exposures, which is an ecologically relevant finding providing key information towards the formulation of environmentally safe sunscreen products.

RISK FACTORS FOR POST-LIVER TRANSPLANT BILIARY COMPLICATIONS IN THE ABSENCE OF ARTERIAL COMPLICATIONS.

Background: - Biliary complications (BC) represent the most frequent complication after liver transplantation, up to 34% of cases.

Aim: To identify modifiable risk factors to biliary complications after liver transplantation, essential to decrease morbidity.

Method: Clinical data, anatomical characteristics of recipient and donors, and transplant operation features of 306 transplants with full arterial patency were collected to identify risk factors associated with BC.

Results: BC occurred in 22.9% after 126 days (median) post-transplantation. In univariate analyses group 1 (without BC, n=236) and group 2 patients (with BC, n=70) did not differ on their general characteristics. BC were related to recipient age under 40y (p=0.029), CMV infection (p=0.021), biliary disease as transplant indication (p=0.018), lower pre-transplant INR (p=0.009), and bile duct diameter <3 mm (p=0.033). CMV infections occurred sooner in patients with postoperative biliary complications vs. control (p=0.07). In a multivariate analysis, only CMV infection, lower INR, and shorter bile duct diameter correlated with BC. Positive CMV antigenemia correlated with biliary complications, even when titers lied below the treatment threshold.

Conclusions: Biliary complications after liver transplantation correlated with low recipient INR before operation, bile duct diameter <3 mm, and positive antigenemia for CMV or disease manifestation. As the only modifiable risk factor, routine preemptive CMV inhibition is suggested to diminish biliary morbidity after liver transplant.

Chlorogenic acid improves the quality of boar semen processed in Percoll.

This study aimed to evaluate if the addition of chlorogenic acid (ChA) to semen extenders improves the quality of cooled boar semen processed in Percoll. The experimental design was randomized blocks (ejaculates) in a 2×3 factorial (with or without Percoll, and three antioxidant systems: a negative control, without supplementation, a positive control - vitamin E, and ChA), totaling six treatments and 12 repetitions. ChA and vitamin E (VE) were added at 4.5 mg/ml and 400 μg/ml in extender, respectively. At 0, 48 and 72h of storage at 15ºC, 80 ml insemination doses each containing 2.0 billion sperm cells were submitted to centrifugation in Percoll. The use of Percoll impaired (P<0.01) all motility patterns but decreased (P<0.01) the number of abnormal cells at 0, 48 and 72h of storage. Both VE and ChA improved (P<0.05) the total motility after Percoll processing, but only in semen stored for 48h. The same effect was not observed (P>0.05) in semen stored for 72h. ChA improved (P<0.05) the total motility of the semen stored for 72h, but this effect was not observed (P>0.05) when the semen was processed in Percoll. The antioxidants had no effect (P>0.05) on the viability and integrity of the acrosome, but ChA reduced (P<0.05) the number of abnormal cells at 0h, while VE increased the number of abnormal cells in semen stored for 72h, independent of the use of Percoll. There was no effect (P>0.05) of antioxidants or Percoll on the concentration of malondialdehyde in seminal plasma. The use of Percoll had no effect (P>0.05) on the cholesterol efflux, but ChA increased (P<0.05) this parameter at 0h and reduced (P<0.05) in the semen stored for 72h not processed with Percoll. In conclusion, the addition of ChA to semen extenders improved the quality of boar semen processed or not in Percoll.

[The Impact of Patient Transfer After Rupture of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm].

Objective: determine whether patient transfer adversely affects the survival of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) patients after conventional surgery.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all patients undergoing attempted repair of an rAAA at a tertiary center, over January 2008 and December 2014. Patients were divided into those presenting directly to our center and those transferred from another hospital. The main outcome variable was 24-hour or 30-day mortality, with secondary variables including time to surgical treatment, length of intensive care unit stay and total length hospitalization.

Results: 78 patients (88% men) underwent attempted open repair of an rAAA during this period, 69% (54 cases) were transferred from another institution. Both groups were similar in terms of demographic characteristics, comorbidities and hemodynamic stability. The overall mortality rate was 51% at 30 days. Transferred patients took twice as long as direct patients to get to the operating room (median 7,9 vs. 3,9 horas, p < 0,05), Although the difference for surgery treatment, there was no difference in 24-hour and 30-day mortality between the transferred group and direct group (26% e 50% vs. 29% e 58%, p < 0,05). Mean intensive care unit stay (median, 12 vs. 4 dias, p = 0,04) and total hospitalization (median 11 vs. 4 dias, p = 0,04) were sustantially superior in the transferred group.

Conclusions: Transfer of patients with RAAA in this series results in a doubling of the time interval between initial patient presentation and arrival in the operating room. This, however, did not result in any disadvantage in the survival rate between the groups. The total length and resources consumption were higher in the transfer group. These results may be attributed to a pre-selection of patients (clinically stable) who are able to tolerate such a delay in surgical treatment, secondary to transfer.

Comparative data on effects of alkaline pretreatments and enzymatic hydrolysis on bioemulsifier production from sugarcane straw by Cutaneotrichosporon mucoides.

Bioemulsifiers are surface active compounds which could be potentially used in food processing, cosmetic sector and oil recovery. Sugarcane straw (SS), was used as the raw substrate for the production of bio-emulsifiers (BE) by Cutaneotrichosporon mucoides. Three different delignification strategies using dilute sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfite and ammonium hydroxide followed by enzymatic hydrolysis (Cellic CTec 2, 7.5% total solids, 15 FPU/g, 72 h) were studied. Enzyme hydrolysis of ammonium hydroxide pretreated SS showed a maximum of 62.19 ± 0.74 g/l total reducing sugars with 88.35% hydrolytic efficiency (HE) followed by sodium hydroxide (60.06 ± 0.33 g/l; 85.40% HE) and sodium sulfite pretreated SS (57.22 ± 0.52 g/l; 84.71% HE), respectively. The ultrastructure of SS (native and delignified) by fourier transform-infrared and near infrared spectroscopy, revealed notable structural differences. The fermentation of hydrolysates by C. mucoides into bioemulsifiers showing emulsification index (EI) of 54.33%, 48.66% and 32.66% from sodium sulfite, sodium hydroxide, and ammonium hydroxide pretreated SS, respectively.

Origin of the São Paulo Yellow Fever epidemic of 2017-2018 revealed through molecular epidemiological analysis of fatal cases.

The largest outbreak of yellow fever of the 21 century in the Americas began in 2016, with intense circulation in the southeastern states of Brazil, particularly in sylvatic environments near densely populated areas including the metropolitan region of São Paulo city (MRSP) during 2017-2018. Herein, we describe the origin and molecular epidemiology of yellow fever virus (YFV) during this outbreak inferred from 36 full genome sequences taken from individuals who died following infection with zoonotic YFV. Our analysis revealed that these deaths were due to three genetic variants of sylvatic YFV that belong the South American I genotype and that were related to viruses previously isolated in 2017 from other locations in Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro states). Each variant represented an independent virus introduction into the MRSP. Phylogeographic and geopositioning analyses suggested that the virus moved around the peri-urban area without detectable human-to-human transmission, and towards the Atlantic rain forest causing human spill-over in nearby cities, yet in the absence of sustained viral transmission in the urban environment.

[True Aneurysms of the Upper Limb: a Single-Centre Experience].

Introduction: True arterial aneurysms of the upper limb are rare and their treatment is intended to avoid complications as distal embolization, compression of surrounding neurovascular structures or rupture.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to review the experience of a department in the surgical treatment of true arterial aneurysms of the upper limb.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed between January 2007 and August 2017.

Results: From a total of eleven patients, nine were male and two were female. One of the patients had surgery twice because of two consecutive aneurysms of the upper limb. From a total of twelve cases, two were subclavian, one was axillary and nine were brachial aneurysms. Three of them had degenerative/idiopathic aetiology, one was associated to a cervical rib and seven occurred in the setting of arteriovenous fistula or kidney graft. Five patients had emergent surgery and the others had elective surgery. All of the patients were submitted to aneurysmectomy. As 30-day complications, there were two haematomas, one compartment syndrome and two early graft occlusions. Four patients needed re-intervention. During the follow-up period, all the grafts initially preserved were patent. There were no further known complications or amputation procedures.

Conclusion: In this review most of the aneurysms were found in patients with haemodialysis vascular access or kidney grafts. Despite the need for early re-intervention in some cases, the surgical treatment of true arterial aneurysms of the upper limb is a low morbidity procedure.

Mercury levels in Southern Ocean squid: Variability over the last decade.

The concentrations of total and proportions of organic mercury were measured in tissues of 355 individuals of 8 species of Southern Ocean squid (Alluroteuthis antarcticus, Bathyteuthis abyssicola, Filippovia knipovitchi, Galiteuthis glacialis, Gonatus antarcticus, Kondakovia longimana, Psychroteuthis glacialis and Slosarczykovia circumantarctica). Squid were caught around South Georgia (Scotia Sea) during 5 cruises, between the austral summers of 2006/07 to 2016/17 to evaluate temporal changes in bioaccumulation and tissue partitioning. Total mercury concentrations varied between 4 ng g and 804 ng g among all tissues. Net accumulation of mercury in muscle with size was observed in A. antarcticus, B. abyssicola and P. glacialis, but no relationship was found for S. circumantarctica and lower concentrations were observed in larger individuals of G. glacialis. Muscle tissues had the highest mercury concentrations in the majority of species, except for F. knipovitchi for which the digestive gland contained highest concentrations. In terms of the percentage of organic mercury in the tissues, muscle always contained the highest values (67%-97%), followed by the digestive gland (22%-38%). Lowest organic mercury percentages were found consistently in the gills (9%-19%), suggesting only low levels of incorporation through the dissolved pathway and/or a limited redistribution of dietary organic mercury towards this tissue. Overall, results are indicative of a decreasing trend of mercury concentrations in the majority of analysed species over the last decade. As cephalopods are an important Southern Ocean trophic link between primary consumers and top predators, these changes suggest decreasing mercury levels in lower trophic levels and an alleviation of the mercury burden on higher predators that consume squid.

Intranasal insulin treatment modulates the neurotropic, inflammatory, and oxidant mechanisms in the cortex and hippocampus in a low-grade inflammation model.

The inflammatory process plays a critical role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Insulin is used in preclinical and clinical studies of neurological disorders. Its intranasal (IN) administration directly in the brain allows for its peripheral metabolic effects to be avoided. Swiss male mice were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (0.1 mg/kg) to induce low-grade inflammation. IN insulin treatment was initiated 4 h later at a dose of 1.7 IU once daily for 5 days. LPS induced cognitive deficits, which the IN insulin treatment reversed. LPS significantly decreased, whereas IN insulin significantly increased the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor-β in the cortex. In the hippocampus, IN insulin significantly decreased the BDNF level. LPS significantly increased the interleukin (IL)-6 levels in the cortex, while IN Insulin significantly decreased its levels in the hippocampus. The tumor necrosis factor-α levels were significantly decreased by IN insulin both in the cortex and hippocampus. Moreover, IN insulin significantly increased the IL-10 levels in the cortex. The levels of oxidative and nitrosative stress were significantly higher in the LPS-treated mice; however, IN insulin had a modulatory effect on both. LPS significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activity both in the cortex and hippocampus, whereas IN insulin significantly increased the activity of both superoxide dismutase and catalase in the hippocampus and that of catalase in the cortex. The hydrogen peroxide levels revealed that LPS significantly affected the electron transport chain. Therefore, IN insulin could be useful in the treatment of neuroinflammatory diseases.

Improvement in muscular strength and aerobic capacities in elderly people occurs independently of physical training type or exercise model.

Objectives: Progressive decline of physiological processes with aging is normal. Aging is also associated with decreased functional capacity and onset of many diseases. This study evaluated the changes in physical fitness (PF), body composition (BC), and lipid profile (LP) in elderly men completing different training protocols.

Methods: Fifty-five men (age 60-80 years) were randomized into the following groups: without training, aerobic training on dry land, combined training on dry land, and combined training in water. Training was conducted for 8 weeks, and PF, LP, and BC were assessed at the beginning and end of the intervention.

Results: Significant improvements were observed in all parameters; however, combined programs on land or in water were more effective at improving strength and aerobic fitness. Combined exercise produced greater effects on BC and LP and some muscle fitness parameters; however, improvements in muscular and aerobic capacities occurred independently of exercise type or model.

Conclusion: These results indicate that the effects of training occur regardless of training type or model, and are directly associated with training periodization, adherence, and regularity.

[Aortic mural thrombus].

Aortic mural thrombus is a rare clinical finding in the absence of aneurysm or atherosclerosis but an important source of noncardiogenic emboli with a difficult diagnosis and a high rate of complications, including high mortality. It appears to occur more frequently in young adults usually with underlying pro-thrombotic disorder. With the increasing use of high resolution imaging, the asymptomatic mural thrombus became an increasingly frequent finding, but its potential for embolization or the best treatment are still a matter of debate. The management of mural thrombus in non-atherosclerotic aorta represents a challenge because no guidelines are available, and should be individualized. The therapeutic approach should include the triple aspects of aortic mural thrombus: primary disease anticoagulation treatment, surgical thrombectomy to solve embolic complications and endovascular/classical surgery to exclude the thrombus from the aorta. Historically therapeutic anticoagulation was proposed as first-line therapy and surgical intervention was reserved for mobile thrombus, recurrent embolism and contraindication for anticoagulation. However, it is associated with a 25-50% embolic recurrence rate, thrombus persistence in 35% and secondary aortic surgery in up to 31% of the cases. Recent data suggest that endovascular coverage of the aortic thrombus, when feasible, appears to be an effective and safe procedure with a low recurrence and re-embolization rates. In this article we review the published literature concerning this topic.

Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation (UV-A+UV-B) on the Antioxidant Metabolism of the Red Macroalga Species Acanthophora spicifera (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) From Different Salinity and Nutrient Conditions.

Acanthophora spicifera (M.Vahl) Børgesen is a macroalga of great economic importance. This study evaluated the antioxidant responses of two algal populations of A. spicifera adapted to different abiotic conditions when exposed to ultraviolet-A+ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-A+UV-B). Experiments were performed using the water at two collection points for 7 days of acclimatization and 7 days of exposure to UVR (3 h per day), followed by metabolic analyses. At point 1, water of 30 ± 1 practical salinity unit (psu) had concentrations of 1.06 ± 0.27 mm , 8.47 ± 0.01 mm , 0.17 ± 0.01 mm and pH 7.88. At point 2, water of 35 ± 1 psu had concentrations of 1.13 ± 0.05 mm , 3.73 ± 0.01 mm , 0.52 ± 0.01 mm and pH 8.55. Chlorophyll a, phycobiliproteins, carotenoids, mycosporins, polyphenolics and antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase) were evaluated. The present study demonstrates that ultraviolet radiation triggers antioxidant activity in the A. spicifera. However, such activation resulted in greater responses in samples of the point 1, with lower salinity and highest concentration of nutrients.

Supplementing Maturation Medium With Insulin Growth Factor I and Vitrification-Warming Solutions With Reduced Glutathione Enhances Survival Rates and Development Ability of Matured Vitrified-Warmed Pig Oocytes.

The present study sought to determine whether maturation (IVM) of pig oocytes in a medium supplemented with insulin growth factor-I (IGF-I) and subsequent vitrification with or without reduced glutathione (GSH) affect their quality and developmental competence, and the expression of genes involved in antioxidant, apoptotic and stress responses. In Experiment 1, cumulus-oocyte complexes were matured in the absence or presence of IGF-I (100 ng·mL) and then vitrified-warmed with or without 2 mM of GSH. Maturation rate was evaluated before vitrification, and oocyte viability, DNA fragmentation and relative transcript abundances of BCL-2-associated X protein (), BCL2-like1 (), heat shock protein 70 (), glutathione peroxidase 1 () and superoxide dismutase 1 () genes were assessed in fresh and vitrified-warmed oocytes. In Experiment 2, fresh and vitrified-warmed oocytes were fertilized and their developmental competence determined. Whereas the addition of IGF-I to maturation medium had no effect on oocyte maturation, it caused an increase in the survival rate of vitrified-warmed oocytes. This effect was accompanied by a concomitant augment in the relative transcript abundance of and a decrease of . Furthermore, the addition of GSH to vitrification-warming media increased survival rates at post-warming. Likewise, the action of GSH was concomitant with an increase in the relative abundance of and a decrease of transcript. Blastocyst rates of vitrified-warmed oocytes did not differ from their fresh counterparts when IGF-I and GSH were combined. In conclusion, supplementing maturation medium with 100 ng·mL IGF-I and vitrification-warming solutions with 2 mM GSH improves the quality and cryotolerance of IVM pig oocytes, through a mechanism that involves and expression.

Spatial variability in total and organic mercury levels in Antarctic krill Euphausia superba across the Scotia Sea.

Total and organic mercury concentrations were determined for males, females and juveniles of Euphausia superba collected at three discrete locations in the Scotia Sea (South Orkney Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic Polar Front) to assess spatial mercury variability in Antarctic krill. There was clear geographic differentiation in mercury concentrations, with specimens from the South Orkney Islands having total mercury concentrations 5 to 7 times higher than Antarctic krill from South Georgia and the Antarctic Polar Front. Mercury did not appear to accumulate with life-stage since juveniles had higher concentrations of total mercury (0.071 μg g from South Orkney Islands; 0.014 μg g from South Georgia) than adults (0.054 μg g in females and 0.048 μg g in males from South Orkney Islands; 0.006 μg g in females and 0.007 μg g in males from South Georgia). Results suggest that females may use egg laying as a mechanism to excrete mercury, with eggs having higher concentrations than the corresponding somatic tissue. Organic mercury makes up a minor percentage of total mercury (15-37%) with the percentage being greater in adults than in juveniles. When compared to euphausiids from other parts of the world, the concentration of mercury in Antarctic krill is within the same range, or higher, highlighting the global distribution of this contaminant. Given the high potential for biomagnification of mercury through food webs, concentrations in Antarctic krill may have deleterious effects on long-lived Antarctic krill predators.

Cardioprotective effects of physical exercise on redox biology in mice exposed to hand-rolled cornhusk cigarette smoke.

The present study sought to evaluate the effects of physical training on histological parameters and oxidative stress in the myocardium of mice chronically exposed to hand-rolled cornhusk cigarette (HRCC) smoke. Male Swiss mice (60 days old, 30-35 g) were either exposed to ambient air or passively exposed to the smoke of 12 cigarettes daily over 3 sessions (4 cigarettes per session) for 60 consecutive days with or without physical training for 8 weeks. Forty-eight hours after the last training session, the heart was surgically removed for histological analysis and measurement of oxidative stress parameters. Histological imaging revealed cell disruption, with poorly defined nuclei, in the mice exposed to HRCC smoke, but not in the control group. However, mice exposed to HRCC smoke with physical training displayed signs of tissue repair and improved tissue integrity. Biochemical analysis revealed decreased production of superoxide, 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein (DCF), and nitrite, as well as decreased protein carbonylation, in the physical training groups, likely due to the exercise-induced increase in glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity and glutathione (GSH) content. Taken together, our results suggest that physical exercise exerts cardioprotective effects by modulating the redox responses in animals exposed to HRCC smoke.

Epidemiologic study of cluster headache prevalence in a medium-size city in Brazil.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of cluster headache (CH) in Barbacena, a medium-size city in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Methods: The total population of Barbacena is 126,284 inhabitants and the Family Health Strategy Program covers 84,610 of them. In order to identify patients with cluster headache, 36,145 of these inhabitants were screened, following which, a questionnaire was completed by 181 health agents distributed throughout the 28 health posts belonging to the Family Health Strategy network. The completed questionnaires were selected based on the clinical criteria established by the International Headache Society, and those patients (18 years of age or older) with a possible CH diagnosis were later assessed by a headache specialist. This was an observational, cross-sectional study.

Results: In all, 15 patients were diagnosed as having CH, comprising a prevalence of 0.0414%; or 41.4/100,000 inhabitants.

Conclusion: The prevalence of cluster headache in Barbacena was lower than that observed in many locations worldwide.

Feline heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection: first case report of serological diagnosis in Brazil, confirmed by molecular assay.

The clinical importance of heartworm infection in cats has indeed increased in recent years. Dirofilaria immitis infection has been reported worldwide in cats and continues to be regularly diagnosed in endemic areas. The diagnosis can be overlooked easily, especially in Brazil, where there is not a specific feline immunodiagnostic test, forcing the veterinarians to use a test made for the canine host. In 2015, a 10-year-old female neutered cat was diagnosed with D. immitis using an antigen serological test, based on imunocromatography and designed for dogs. The modified Knott test was negative. As the disease progressed, the cat showed clinical signals of respiratory distress, such as dyspnoea and polypnea in addition to prostration and emaciation, and died a few weeks after the diagnosis. During necropsy, one adult nematode was found in the pulmonary artery. D. immitis infection was confirmed by molecular amplification, performed in the worm fragment. This is the first report of serological diagnosis of feline dirofilariasis in Brazil. A chemoprophylaxis routine in cats should be done, as is done in dogs from endemic areas.

Carotid Paraganglioma - Classical Surgical Technique.

Introduction: A carotid body tumor is a rare neoplasm, generally benign, that predominantly affects people between their fourth and fith decades of life. It manifests as a pulsatile and generally painless cervical mass with firm consistency, located below the angle of the jaw. Clinically it can cause localized pain, dysphagia, hiccups, hoarseness and hypersensitive carotid body syndrome. Surgery is the treatment of choice, bearing in mind the possibility of malignant transformation, peritumoral invasion and metastasis. The most widely-used technique is surgical resection, with or without concomitant preoperative endovascular embolisation. Overall complication rates, stroke rates between 0 and 8% and cranial nerve palsy less than 1% to 49%. Mortality rates vary from 0 to 3%.

Methods: Clinical case of a 69 years old male patient diagnosed with a carotid body tumor in a routine ultrasound exam. The patient was asyntomatic. Complementary exams were then conducted - CT scan and MRI supported the diagnosis. Neck CT scan: Well defined, nodular formation, enhanced after intravenous contrast, localized on the jugular-carotid region, with an aproximate diameter of 36 mm. Neck MRI: Expansive heterogenous solid lesion, localized on carotid bulb, well defined, enhanced after intravenous contrast, compatible with carotid paraganglioma - Shamblin's II.

Results: Patient was submited to a complete surgical classic ressection of the tumor, without any previously procedure. Proximal dissection was made with a help of a nose and ear surgeon. No post-surgery complications, except wound infection at week 3. No nerve damage.

Conclusion: Follow up to 1 year without any complain and no lesions. In an era of multiple techniques there should always be a place for classic, well planned surgeries.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Women: Retrospective Analysis of the Cases that Undergo Surgical Repair.

Introduction: The prevalence of infra-renal aortic abdominal aneurysms (AAA) is about 3 to 4 times higher in men, with a recommendation I 1a for screening men > 65y. Althoug women only represente 20% of the total AAAs they have a significant higher rupture rate - threefold higher - and a worse outcome after ruptured AAA repair. Screening is not consensual but can be recommended for women > 65y who have smoked or have a family history of AAA. Against screening is the fact that the AAA in women have not only a lower incidence but also a late presentation (>80y) but references have been made to the fact that smoking became popular more than 30 years after than men and so the effects just now can start to be seen.

Methods: A retrospective review was made to all women with an infra- renal AAA who undergo a surgical treatment, elective or urgent, in the past 7 years (January 2010 - August 2017) in our hospital. Information was obtained through the clinical process. It was made an evaluation of the demographic information and anatomic features.

Results: 15 cases were reviewed, 4 elective and 11 ruptured surgical repairs. The mean age was 74 and only 4 women were more than 80 years old, with a minium age of 57. More than half the patients were previously diagnosis with hypertension but only 30% had high cholesterol. Only one was a known smoker. None had a diagnosis of cardiac disease. One had a sintomatic cerebrovascular disease. Within the elective cases, all open repair, the intra-hospitalar mortality was zero with a mean stay of 7,5 days. The ruptured cases, 1 endovascular, had a perioperative mortality of 50% The mean aortic diametre at rupture was less than 6 cm.

Conclusion: Data supports the evidence of the morbidity of a ruptured AAA and the high intra-hospitalar mortality in women. Early detection and elective repair should be considered. Sex-specific research is needed to provide the best medical treatment.

Evaluation of porcine beta defensins-1 and -2 as antimicrobial peptides for liquid-stored boar semen: Effects on bacterial growth and sperm quality.

The present study evaluated whether two different antimicrobial peptides (AMP): porcine beta defensins-1 (PBD1) and -2 (PBD2) at three concentrations (1.5 μM, 3 μM and 5 μM) could be a suitable alternative to antibiotics in liquid-stored boar semen. Two separate experiments were conducted with liquid-stored boar semen preserved at 17 °C for 9-10 days. In the first one, we evaluated the impact of adding three concentrations of each AMP on the bacterial growth and sperm quality of boar semen stored for 10 days. In the second experiment, the ability of these AMPs to control bacterial growth was determined over a 9-day period, following artificial inoculation with Escherichia coli at 10 and 10 CFU mL. In both experiments, sperm viability was assessed through flow cytometry, sperm motility was determined with Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) and the inhibitory effect on microbial growth was evaluated by bacteria culture on Luria Bertani agar. PBD1 and PBD2 were found to significantly (P < 0.05) decrease sperm motility at 5 μM (% total motile spermatozoa at day 10, Control: 31.6% ± 1.2% vs. PBD1: 6.5% ± 0.3% and PBD2: 5.6% ± 0.4%). Although the highest inhibitory effect on bacterial growth was observed at 3 μM (day 10, PBD1: 1.4 × 10 ± 6.2 × 10 CFU mL and PBD2: 9.1 × 10 ± 2.4 × 10 CFU mL) and 5 μM (day 10, PBD1: 1.2 × 10 ± 5.1 × 10 CFU mL; PBD2: 8.7 × 10 ± 2.9 × 10 CFU mL), the control with antibiotic was found to be more effective (day 10, 8.3 × 10 ± 1.6 × 10 CFU mL). In conclusion, PBD1 and PBD2 may be added to antibiotic-free extenders for boar semen at a concentration of 3 μM, but do not completely control all bacterial growth.

Zika and chikungunya virus infections in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients and oncohematological patients.

mosquitoes are well adapted in domestic environments and widespread in tropical regions. Since 2015, Brazil has been experiencing a triple epidemic of dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHKV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses. The last 2 viruses are likely following the path of DENV, which has been endemic in most parts of the country since the 1980s. Given this triple epidemic, we proposed a prospective and collaborative study to assess the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality of DENV, CHKV, and ZIKV infections in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients and oncohematological patients. A case definition strategy (fever and rash) was used to prompt diagnostic investigation of DENV, ZIKV, and CHKV, which was accomplished by real-time polymerase chain reaction with plasma and urine samples. Clinical follow-up was performed 7 and 30 days after symptom onset. We report here the first cases of ZIKV and CHKV infections diagnosed in this ongoing study. From February to May 2016, 9 of the 26 patients (34.6%) fulfilling case definition criteria were diagnosed with DENV (3 cases), ZIKV (4 cases), or CHKV (2 cases) infections. Prolonged viremia and viruria were observed in dengue and Zika fever cases, respectively. Thrombocytopenia was the most frequent complication. Delayed engraftment was noted in 1 patient who acquired ZIKV 25 days before HSCT. All patients survived without sequelae. With the geographic expansion of arboviruses, donor and recipient screening may become mandatory. Patients living in areas where these viruses are not endemic are also at risk, since these viruses can be transmitted by blood as well as organ or tissue transplantation.

Histological characteristics of the gonads of pig fetuses and their relationship with fetal anatomical measurements.

The objective was to evaluate the histomorphometric characteristics of the testis and ovaries of pig fetuses at different gestational ages, as well as their correlation with some fetus measurements. Forty-four fetuses were separated for gender (male and female) and gestational age (50, 80 and 106days of gestation). After slaughter, fetuses had their body length, head and thoracic perimeters measured and their gonads submitted to histomorphometric analyses. The gonadal characteristics at different gestational ages were statistically compared, correlations with the fetal measurements were performed and equations to predict the gonadal characteristics from the fetal measurements were obtained. The testis weight logarithmically increased along pregnancy, whereas ovary weight increased in a linear manner. The cordonal length and number of Sertoli cells were positively correlated with the fetal measurements, being higher at 106days gestation, while the nuclear volume of these cells were negatively correlated. The total number of follicles was higher at day 80 and 106 of pregnancy. The number of oogonia decreased along the pregnancy, however, their nucleus size was increased. The number of follicles and volume of oogonia were positively correlated with the fetal measurements, while the number of oogonia was negatively correlated. Equations were obtained for the prediction of gonadal characteristics of fetuses. We concluded that in pigs testis cell proliferation, ovary development and histological organization was more pronounced during the final third of pregnancy. Fetal weight and size were strongly related to gonadal development, and can be used to estimate the histological characteristics of gonads.

Mice undergoing neuropathic pain induce anxiogenic-like effects and hypernociception in cagemates.

Rodents can recognize pain-related responses in conspecifics. Therefore, cohabitation with a conspecific animal with chronic pain can potentially promote a stressful situation, which can trigger behavioral changes such as anxiety and depression and alter nociceptive responses. In this study we investigated the effect of cohabitation with a mouse undergoing sciatic nerve constriction (neuropathic pain model). The cagemates were evaluated for nociception (writhing test), anxiety (elevated plus-maze and open field tests), depression (forced swim, tail suspension, and sucrose preference tests), and corticosterone levels. Male Swiss mice were housed in pairs for 14 days, and then divided into three groups: cagemate nerve constriction, in which one animal of each pair was subjected to constriction of the sciatic nerve; cagemate sham, in which one animal from each pair was subjected to the same surgery but without constriction; and control, in which animals were not subjected to any surgical procedure. After 14 days, the cagemates were evaluated using behavioral tests. Social interaction with a conspecific undergoing constriction of the sciatic nerve induced hypernociception and increased anxiety-related responses, whereas in depression tests inconclusive responses and no changes in corticosterone levels were found. In conclusion, cohabitation with suffering conspecifics induces changes in nociceptive responses, as well as in affective responses including anxiety.

Popliteal artery aneurysm surgical repair: Retrospective unicenter analysis.

Background: Popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) thromboembolic complications may result in limb loss. We review our experience reporting outcomes in terms of complications and early and long-term patency rates.

Methods: From 2004 to 2013, 116 PAA required surgical repair at Coimbra Hospital and Universitary Centre, Portugal. Outcomes were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank tests, X2, and Cox proportional hazards models.

Results: A total of 116 PAAs with a mean diameter of 3.3 cm (1.5 to 10 cm) were followed. 40% limbs were asymptomatic and 27% presented with acute ischemia. 97% underwent medial bypass procedure (venous in 66%). Early mortality was 0.9% (1/116). 30-day and five-year cumulative limb salvage was 94.0% and 87%, respectively. There was no limb loss in asymptomatic patients and 1-3 Rutherford chronic ischemia. 62% early amputations were performed in acute ischemia, half of them with functioning bypass. 30-day primary and secondary patency rates were 91% and 97% respectively, higher with GSVs (96% and 99%) than PTFE (58% and 95%, P < .05; Fig 1). The 5-year primary and secondary patency rates were 68.1% and 73,5%, respectively, higher with GSVs (83% and 87%) than PTFE (37% and 43%, P < .05). Two recurrent PAAs (1,7%) required reintervention. Predictors for both amputation and loss of primary patency were PTFE bypass (p =0,002), and emergent surgery (p = 0,005). Acute ischemia was also predictor for amputation (p = 0,026), but not for loss of primary patency.

Conclusions: Results of surgery on asymptomatic PAAs are good - significantly better than those from symptomatic PAAs. The results are similarly good in claudicants. The risks of early and late amputation were higher with prosthetic grafts and in an emergent settings.

Does hip displacement influence health-related quality of life in children with cerebral palsy?

Objective: To evaluate the association of hip lateralisation with health-related quality of life (HRQL) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) using the Caregiver Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities (CPCHILD(®)) questionnaire.

Methods: We assessed n = 34 patients (mean age: 10.2 years, SD: 4.7 years; female: n = 16) with bilateral CP and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) Level III-V using the CPCHILD(®) questionnaire. Hip lateralisation was measured by Reimer`s migration percentage (MP).

Results: There was an association between both, MP and GMFCS with CPCHILD(®) total score. Stratified analyses did not suggest interaction of the association between MP and CPCHILD(®) total score by GMFCS level. After adjustment for GMFCS level, we found a significant linear decrease of CPCHILD(®) total score of -0.188 points by 1% increment in MP.

Conclusions: There was an association between MP and HRQL, which could not be explained by the GMFCS level.

Doppler velocimetric parameters of the testicular artery in healthy dogs.

This study aimed to examine the Doppler velocimetric pattern of the testicular artery of small dogs in two different locations. Testes of 21 dogs were evaluated by two-dimensional ultrasonography to measure testicular volume and by Doppler ultrasonography to record the velocimetric patterns of the testicular artery in the spermatic cord and marginal location. The volume of left testes (4.70 ± 1.22 cm(3)) was significantly higher than the volume of the right testes (4.45 ± 1.17 cm(3)). Peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the left spermatic cord was significantly higher than the right side. End-diastolic velocity was significantly higher in the marginal artery than the spermatic cord on both sides; however, resistance and pulsatility indexes were significantly lower in the marginal artery. Results demonstrate the viability of Doppler ultrasonography for characterization of the testicular artery in small dogs and Doppler velocimetric values vary according to the location of measurement along the artery.

Construction and validation of a distance learning module on premedication antisepsis for nursing professionals.

The aim of this descriptive study, carried out at a public university, was to design, develop, and validate a distance learning module on intramuscular premedication antisepsis. The content was introduced in the Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, based on the Systematic Model for Web-Based Training projects. Ten nurses and information technologists at work consented to participate, in compliance with ethical guidelines, and answered a questionnaire to validate the Virtual Learning Environment. The educational aspects of the environment interface were mostly evaluated as "excellent," whereas the assessment of didactic resources indicated interactivity difficulties. It is concluded that distance learning is an important tool for the teaching of premedication antisepsis. To ensure its effectiveness, appropriate methods and interactive devices must be used.

Pregnant women constitute a risk group for any infection due to their low immunity condition. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, grounded in the Theory of Social Representations that sought to understand the reasons why pregnant women did not vaccinate against influenza A (H1N1). The study included 10 women who were pregnant during the vaccination campaign of 2010. Data were collected in May 2011 through interviews and interpreted by content analysis. From the speeches it was possible to identify the various representations that the vaccine against H1N1 had for these women during their pregnancy as an element which would cause miscarriage and birth defects. The reasons why pregnant women did not vaccinate against H1N1 are associated with fear, lack of information and the myths and beliefs that people bring in their representations and their cultural values.
