Introduction

Since my days at school I have always been interested in Science and Technology, mainly by Chemistry. While finishing my secondary education, the fields of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry got my attention and directed me to start Chemistry studies at the University Complutense de Madrid in 1984. However, during the third year at the Faculty, I swapped my preferences to the field of Physical Chemistry and chose this speciality for the fourth and fifth years of study. At that time I got a fellowship for “Introduction to Research” from the CSIC that gave me the opportunity to spend several months in different Departments of the Physical Chemistry Institute “Rocasolano” (CSIC) and to introduce with more detail the field of Crystallography that quickly caught my attention. I did an undergraduate project in the Department of Crystallography working in the single crystal structure determination of Triazolo-thiadiazoles and performing statistical studies about the geometry of N-H…Nsp2 hydrogen bonds using the Cambridge Crystallographic Database.
After finishing my MsC in Chemistry in 1989 I got an FPI Fellowship from the Ministry of Education and started working in my PhD degree in the Crystallography Department of the “Rocasolano” Institute at the CSIC. The work dealt with the crystal and molecular structure of iminophosphorane derived proton sponges, involving single crystal X-ray diffraction, semi-empirical and ab initio quantum mechanics calculations and statistical studies using structural databases. The work was directed by Dra C. Foces-Foces in close collaboration with Prof. José Elguero (Inst. Organic Chemistry, CSIC) and allows me to get the PhD degree with “cum laude” qualification and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award.
After that, I obtained a Post-Doc fellowship from the Ministry of Education to start working with the group of Prof. Michael Rossmann at the Department of Biological Sciences in Purdue University (USA). There I solved the crystal structures of the Parvovirus Minute Virus of Mice (MVM) and some mutants of Canine Parvovirus (CPV).
Two years later, in 1996 I returned to the Crystallography Dept. at the “Rocasolano” Institute (CSIC) with a research contract for the reincorporation of PhDs. Then I continued working simultaneously in the structure of other strains of MVM parvovirus and the crystal and molecular structures of interesting organic compounds (see extended CV or Researcher ID B-5386-2008 for a complete list of publications).
In 1999 the University of Santiago de Compostela showed its interest to get my services in setting up the University X-ray Unit as a general service for the research community. Since then I have been working there as the Head of the X-ray Unit, where we provide advice and services in many X-ray related techniques: single crystal and powder diffraction, Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), X-ray fluorescence, reflectometry, glancing incidence, multilayers... covering as many areas as possible where structural and analytical studies related with X-ray radiation are demanded by our users and collaborators.
