Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Associate Professor and former Head, Dept. of Marine Science, University of Calcutta (INDIA) has been active in the sphere of Oceanography since 1985. He obtained his Ph.D as NET qualified scholar in 1994 after securing Gold Medal in M.Sc (Marine Science) from University of Calcutta. Since then he joined Calcutta Port Trust and WWF (World Wide Fund), in various capacities to carry out research programmes on environmental science, biodiversity conservation, climate change and carbon sequestration. Presently Dr. Mitra is serving Techno India University, West Bengal as the Director of Research. He has to his credit about 485 scientific publications in various National and International journals, and 36 books of postgraduate standards. Dr. Mitra is presently the member of several committees like PACON International, IUCN, SIOS etc. and has successfully completed about 16 projects on biodiversity loss in fishery sector, coastal pollution, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration. Dr. Mitra also visited as faculty member and invited speakers in several foreign Universities of Singapore, Kenya, Oman and USA. In 2008, Dr. Mitra was invited as visiting fellow at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA to deliver a series of lecture on Climate Change. Dr. Mitra also successfully guided 32 Ph.D students. Presently his domain of expertise includes environmental science, mangrove ecology, sustainable aquaculture, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration.

Estuarine Pollution in the Lower Gangetic Delta-Threats and Management

This book critically analyzes the water quality in the lower Gangetic delta, and examines theenvironmental conditions and physical processes operating in this rich ecosystem. Readers with an interest in environmental science, geography, oceanography, marine biology, environmental biology, aquatic pollution and ecology will find the research presented here most appealing. Readers will discover critical aspects of the chemistry of the estuarine water (particularly that of Hooghly and Matla estuaries) in the lower stretch of the delta region along with the causes and effects of pollution in and around this region. Particular attention is given to the bioaccumulation of conservative pollutants in edible fishes and floral communities thriving in this region. Several case studies are also incorporated to highlight the vulnerability of pollution in this region.Chapters also address the impacts of climate change (specifically acidification) on the concentration and behavior of conservative pollutants. Finally, the book highlights some mitigation measures at the technology and policy level to minimize the negative impacts posed by different groups of pollutants on the estuarine biodiversity.

In the present study we carried out an investigation on the antimicrobial activity and phytochemical constituents of the fruit of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, a true mangrove species collected from Indian Sundarbans located at the apex of Bay of Bengal in the maritime state of West Bengal. Antimicrobial activity of n-hexane extract of fruit parts and leaf varied as per the order leaf > pericarp > exocarp > endocarp and for water extract the order is endocarp > exocarp > pericarp > leaf.

Near surface Air Temperature and Carbon dioxide in Indian Sundarbans: A Time Series Analysis

The atmospheric carbon dioxide was measured at 18 m above the ground with a Non-Dispersive Infra-Red (NDIR) gas analyzer fitted with a thermometer during 1984 – 2016 at Sagar Island in western part of Indian Sundarbans. The atmospheric carbon dioxide exhibited the lowest value of 384.98 ppm (during premonsoon 1984) to 401.22 ppm (during postmonsoon 2016). The highest peak of air temperature during premonsoon 2009 may be attributed to Aila (a super-cyclone that passed across the lower Gangetic delta during premonsoon 2009). We find overall increasing trends of these two variables, which strongly confirm the rapid rate of industrialization and urbanization in this mangrove dominated ecosystem. The change of land use pattern (due to unplanned expansion of shrimp culture farm at the cost of natural mangroves) is also a strong reason for the local scale rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide as well as air temperature. Massive plantation of mangroves may be an effective road map to get rid of the situation.

Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) regulation by anthropogenic activities and natural factors

The present study has illustrated the estimation of the Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) distribution keeping in view the variation of environment. Hence two significantly contrasting environments were selected to evaluate the role of anthropogenic/natural factors on the SOC budget. The regions selected as experimental beds for the present study are highly urbanized city of Kolkata and natural mangrove ecosystem of Sundarbans. 6 stations in each of these two regions were selected during January 2018. We observed relatively higher value of SOC at Kolkata (mean value = 1.95%) compared to mangrove dominated Indian Sundarbans (mean value = 1.37%). The relatively higher values in the city soil may be due to the impact of domestic and municipal waste generation and dumping by the heavily crowded population of the city. The lower value of SOC in Sundarbans may be attributed to the tidal washing of the top soil at regular intervals of time. Erosion of embankments is also a cause of low SOC value in Sundarban region.

Spatio-Temporal Variations of Heavy Metal Levels in Green Seaweed Inhabiting Indian Sundarbans

Zn, Cu and Pb were analyzed during 2015-16 in the thallus body of a common green seaweed, Enteromorpha compressa through three seasons covering three stations (Gosaba, Bali Island and Jharkhali). These three stations are located in the central part of Indian Sundarbans. The order of heavy metal accumulation is Zn > Cu > Pb. The seasonal sequence of accumulation is monsoon > postmonsoon > premonsoon. ANOVA carried on the observed data reflects significant spatio-temporal variation.

Suaeda sp. Based Food Products: A Unique Avenue for Alternative Livelihood

We analysed the nutritional status of samosa and kachuri (the most two common food for North Indian breakfast) developed from Suaeda maritima collected from Indian Sundarbans during July, 2018. These two food products were prepared by mixing variable proportions of semi-dried leaves of the species with the ingredients of samosa (potato) and kachuri (Sattu). Significant variations in biochemical composition between the food products (having different levels of semi-dried leaves of the species) is observed as revealed from ANOVA (p ≤ 0.01). Our first order analysis shows that these food products are not only rich in nutrients, but can also be linked up with the domain of mangrove-based alternative livelihood of Sundarbans people.

BIOACCUMULATION PATTERN OF HEAVY METALS IN VEGETABLES COLLECTED FROM SELECTED AREAS IN AND AROUND KOLKATA CITY (INDIA)

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals is a burning problem of current times. Considerable studies on heavy metal toxicity at various trophic levels of the ecosystem indicate the serious and far reaching implications of the issue at a global scale. The current paper investigates the bioaccumulation pattern of heavy metals such as Copper, Zinc, Lead in commonly consumed vegetables such as cauliflower, radish and brinjal collected from selected areas in and around the metropolitan city of Kolkata. The bioaccumulation trend shows that Zn>Cu>Pb irrespective of the study areas; Swarupnagar Community Development Block and East Kolkata Wetlands. The pattern of accumulation in vegetables also shows the order Radish>Cauliflower>Brinjal irrespective of the selected areas. A long term survey on the bioaccumulation pattern of heavy metals through seasons may prove the potential of the species to be used as indicator of heavy metal pollution. Such studies are to be repeated with rigorous monitoring of the commonly consumed vegetables in and around Kolkata to prevent the long term effects of such toxic consumption.

Quality of Extensive Brackish Water Polyculture Farm Effluents at Different Production Levels and its Impact on the Receiving Environment

Traditional brackish water aquaculture farms in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India receive sewage water from Kolkata metropolitan city through Bidyadhari River and its tributaries diluted by mixing with sea water. These areas play important ecological role by improving water quality through conversion of nutrient load into fish biomass. Efforts are underway by farmers to increase production by increasing stocking density of fishes along with fertilizer and feed application. Effects of production levels of enhanced low (1.62±0.12, EL), medium (2.34±0.09, EM) and high (2.93±0.21, EH) over existing production level of 0.87±0.06 (EC) tons/ha/year on the effluent quality compared to source water (SW) was studied for 10 months production cycle. Dissolved oxygen concentration and pH was similar in effluents from EC, EL and EM while those were significantly (p<0.05) low in SW and EH. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) of effluents from EC and EL were similar and ranged between 10.97-12.02 ppm whereas significantly (p<0.05) higher in EH (17.07±3.27) and SW (19.55±4.83) while it was moderately high in EM (13.96±2.55). Similar trend has been observed in case of NO3-N, NO2-N, NH4-N and PO4-P. A drastic depletion of bacterial population was observed in all treatments compared to SW. Production from this system can be increased up to 2.34 tons/ ha/ year keeping intact the ecological role.

Salinity based allometric equations for biomass estimation of Sundarban mangroves

Biomass and Bioenergy

Biomass estimation was carried out for three even-aged dominant mangrove species (Avicennia alba, Excoecaria agallocha and Sonneratia apetala) in two regions of Indian Sundarbans with two distinct salinity regimes for three consecutive years (2008e2010) and the results were expressed in tons per hectare (t ha1). In the western region, the total mean biomass of the mangrove species varied as per the order A. alba (41.65 t ha1 in 2008, 55.79 t ha1 in 2009, 60.86 t ha1 in 2010) > S. apetala (31.76 t ha1 in 2008, 32.81 t ha1 in 2009, 39.10 t ha1 in 2010) > E. agallocha (13.89 t ha1 in 2008, 15.54 t ha1 in 2009, 18.28 t ha1 in 2010). In the central region, the order was A. alba (42.06 t ha1 in 2008, 57.09 t ha1 in 2009, 64.57 t ha1 in 2010) > E. agallocha (15.30 t ha1 in 2008, 20.02 t ha1 in 2009, 24.24 t ha1 in 2010) > S. apetala (6.77 t ha1 in 2008, 9.46 t ha1 in 2009, 11.42 t ha1 in 2010). Significant negative correlation was observed between biomass of S. apetala and salinity (p < 0.01), whereas in case of A. alba and E. agallocha positive correlations were observed (p < 0.01). Species-wise linear allometric regression equations for biomass prediction were developed for each salinity zone as a function of diameter at breast height (DBH) based on high coefficient of determination (R2 value). The allometric models are species-specific, but not site-specific.

NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF FOOD PRODUCTS DEVELOPED FROM Salicornia brachiata

The present study systematically investigated the nutritional potential of two types of food products (samosa and kachuri) developed from Salicornia brachiata. Apart from estimating protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre, minerals like calcium, sodium and potassium were also analysed in the food products prepared by mixing variable proportions of semi-dried Salicornia leaves. Significant variations in biochemical composition were observed between the food products (p ≤ 0.01). This may be attributed to mixing of different proportions of potato (in case of samosa) and sattu (in case of kachuri) with Salicornia semi-dried leaves during the preparation of the food products. Development of alternative livelihood from mangrove associate halophytes is the take home message of this research programme.
